Off-the-shelf containers, pots and pills are very nice and handy. But their acquisition sometimes results in a very round sum, which we are not ready to spend on them for one reason or another. And you need to plant seedlings, but where?
The materials at hand will come to the rescue, from which you can get excellent containers for growing seedlings.
Seedling boxes
Seedling boxes have many benefits. One of them is that it is easy to make such boxes on your own with little or no expenses from the family budget. For manufacturing, you can take old boxes, pallets from various building materials and other unnecessary boards. The second plus - the box can be made of any size, perfectly fitting it to the size of the window sill. The third plus is that the boxes are easy to move, they are stable and good for transportation.
But this seemingly ideal container also has its drawbacks. If you do not put a pallet under the box, then during watering it can leak, forming puddles on the windowsill and on the floor under the windowsill. The considerable weight of the box with the earth can also be attributed to the disadvantages. Well, the biggest disadvantage is that it is impossible to transplant plants from a box into open ground without damaging the roots. And this means that the plant will hurt for some time, or it may not take root at all in a new place.
In principle, trauma to the roots can be avoided if you independently build cassettes from plywood slats by dividing the box into small containers in which we plant seedlings and then move them to a permanent place along with a lump of earth from the cell.
Cups of sour cream, yoghurt and other products
To reduce the cost of seedlings, you can also use plastic containers for sour cream, yogurt, mayonnaise, jam, and so on. In principle, they are almost an equivalent replacement for pots. The main thing is to thoroughly rinse the containers so that there are no food residues in them, especially carefully you need to wash containers from under dairy and sour milk products, since lactic acid bacteria can harm the seedlings in the future.
In the bottoms of such containers, be sure to make holes so that excess moisture drains off and the roots of the plants do not start to rot.
Of the advantages of these containers: no need to spend money on their purchase, lightweight. Cons: like ordinary pots, they are inconvenient to transport, you can use them once.
Containers for milk, juice, baby food in bags
Also one of the cheapest ways to get seedling containers. Bags for juices, milk, baby food are thoroughly washed, one of the walls is cut out and the container is ready. In containers from under "small" juices, milk, baby puree, with a capacity of 200 ml, they plant 1-2 seeds, in large bags from under liter and two-liter juices and milk - several pieces, depending on the size. By the way, if you roll up small bags filled with soil with tape, you get wonderful homemade cassettes for growing seedlings. The main thing is that you can adjust the number of cells, as well as the length and width of the entire container.
Thick paper cups
If you have thick paper or thin cardboard, then you can try to roll cups out of them. Moreover, you can choose the shape yourself: round or square, to whom it is more convenient and familiar. To make round cups, you can take an ordinary glass of the required diameter as a shape, just wrap it around the glass, gluing the edges. Then we remove and glue the bottom. Although I prefer not to make the bottom, I just put the containers on the pallet, fill with earth and plant the seeds. Without a bottom, it is then easier to transplant the plant to the garden without injuring the roots, it is enough to carefully squeeze it straight with a lump of earth through the "bottom" into a previously prepared hole.
The main disadvantage is that they can become limp before the plant is transplanted into the ground, in addition, it is also undesirable to transplant the plant into the soil in such a cup, since some paper persists for a long time and does not decompose.
