Various packaging and other materials that have served their life can be given a second life by making containers for planting seedlings from them. The undoubted advantage of making such a container will be the absence of costs for the purchase of special containers, as well as the opportunity to give flight to your imagination, because often the results of such work are very original
Plastic bottles
If you cut them into two or three parts, you get pretty good containers for growing seedlings. And the lack of the bottom of the resulting containers is easily compensated for by pallets or low boxes, into which containers filled with soil are placed. It is also recommended to fill the pallets themselves with the same potting mix by 2 cm.
Some summer residents have gone even further: they make containers for seedlings, cutting out rectangles from plastic bottles, which are then rolled into cylinders of arbitrary diameter, and the edges of homemade containers are fastened with ordinary paper clips. When planting on beds from such a "dish" you don't even have to shake out the seedlings - the cylinders will disintegrate by themselves, you just have to remove the paper clips.
Juice and dairy boxes
In order to get containers for seedlings, such boxes just need to cut off the lower parts. And in order to provide drainage for the seedlings, the bottoms of the newly-made containers are pierced in several places. Then the boxes installed in the pallet are filled with soil and the seeds are sown. When choosing this option for growing seedlings, containers must be equipped with a pallet for the reason that they are perfectly water-permeable.
The structures are very light, moreover, their height can be adjusted. It will also not be difficult to remove the seedlings along with the earthen lump from such containers - the boxes are simply torn apart.
It is also important to know that any containers for dairy products must be thoroughly washed before starting to make containers for seedlings from them. Otherwise, lactic acid bacteria can harm the weak roots of the seedlings.
Newspaper paper cups
Such containers for seedlings are quite popular in the West. In order to become their happy owners, the old newspaper must first be folded in half lengthwise, and then wrapped in several layers around a can or one and a half liter bottle. At the bottom, it is imperative to leave a small allowance for the bottom. The edges are then fastened with a stapler, and the bottom is folded inward. The finished cups need to be filled with earth (the earth is slightly tamped) and seedlings can be planted in them. All containers are then stacked as tightly as possible to each other in boxes or pallets.
For seedlings of cucumbers, eggplants, peppers and tomatoes, cups are made about 10 - 14 cm in height and 8 cm in diameter. And for cabbage seedlings, it will be enough to limit yourself to five centimeters in diameter and seven in height.
It is not at all necessary to remove the seedlings from such cups when planting - you can simply place them in the holes and cover them with a layer of earth.
Cups of yoghurt, instant noodles, sour cream
These cups are a great alternative to plastic cups. 100 ml cups will perfectly replace yoghurt containers, and voluminous 500 ml sour cream cups will be a magnificent home for tiny seedlings after picking. In addition, such containers do not require any additional costs.
Plastic boxes from under store salads or from under cottage cheese
It is also quite convenient to grow seedlings in such containers. They are especially suitable for growing strawberry seedlings.
Toilet roll sleeves
Yes, these cardboard helpers can also quickly turn into seedling containers. It is only important not to forget to place such an unusual container with seedlings in pallets or boxes.
