So why do you need a tapestry anyway? It turns out that it performs a lot of useful functions! Firstly, it allows you to place a fairly large number of blackberry bushes in a very limited space. Secondly, the trellis reliably protects the growing crop from extremely undesirable contact with the soil. Thirdly, it is thanks to it that the normal movement of air flows is ensured, which in turn allows minimizing the conditions for the possible development of fungus or mold. And, fourthly, berries growing on trellises receive much more sunlight, that is, the process of their ripening in this case is noticeably accelerated!
However, in order to avoid possible deformation of blackberry bushes or incorrect development of their crowns, it is important to learn how to properly attach the shoots to the trellises - only in this case it will be possible to speak of the undoubted benefits of such supports! However, this is not so difficult to do - as a rule, even novice summer residents can easily cope with the creation of trellises and with the subsequent placement of blackberries on them!
Other benefits of trellis
The use of the trellis for blackberries is not limited to the above-mentioned advantages - among other things, the trellis allows you to take care of the blackberries more comfortable, because when using it it becomes much easier to clean the blackberry bushes from dried leaves and cut off the branches from them! In addition, in this case it will be much easier to prepare a useful crop for wintering, and the harvest can be removed many times faster! And with this approach, it becomes much easier and more pleasant to water and loosen the soil, apply fertilizers and get rid of weeds!
What are the most commonly used trellises for blackberries?
For growing blackberries, both single-lane and double-lane trellis are used with equal success. Single-strip trellis are equipped with a single tensioned wire and can be either inclined or horizontal or made in the form of a fan. And two-lane trellis have two parallel wires and provide summer residents with wider opportunities for the best formation of blackberry bushes, which in turn most favorably affects both the development of blackberries and the volume of the crop. At the same time, the most technologically advanced design of a two-lane trellis is considered to be a Y-shaped trellis.
Is it realistic to make a trellis with your own hands?
More than! The most important thing is to select high-quality materials for these purposes so that the trellis will serve as long as possible! As a rule, in this case, posts made of metal or wood are taken as a basis. It will not be superfluous to take into account the volumes of future loads on the trellis. Then it is necessary to dig holes, the depth of which should be at least half a meter - it is in them that the support pillars will be installed. Gravel or brick chips are poured onto the very bottom of these pits - these materials will in every possible way prevent the possible shrinkage of the pillars. And only then the support pillars themselves are installed, having thoroughly tamped the soil.
Further, places for future rows of wire are marked on the pillars, trying to maintain a distance of about sixty centimeters between them. In this case, the wire should be stretched to the maximum, not allowing it to sag or loosen it. As for the subsequent planting of blackberries, they are planted right along the trellis at the same distance from each other.
