Onions are perennials. And in the conditions of household farms, the vegetable is cultivated as a biennial plant. But there is a way to get onion heads in one sowing season. To do this, it is grown in an unusual way - through seedlings
Presowing preparation of nigella
Before sowing onion seeds, it is recommended to treat them with an aqueous solution of boric acid. In addition, to stimulate seed germination and plant development, the seed is heated in hot water. However, before proceeding with the pre-sowing preparation of seeds, you need to carefully study the packaging. If it is indicated that fungicides have already been used before packaging, it is best not to use any other methods.
Another way to speed up the emergence of seedlings is to water the soil with hot water before planting. And it can be used regardless of whether the seeds were treated with fungicides by the manufacturer or not.
Sowing onion seeds for seedlings in a greenhouse
Seedlings can be grown in a greenhouse, in a warm garden bed, as well as by sowing in containers at room conditions. At the time of planting in the ground, the seedlings should be approximately 50-60 days.
In greenhouses, seedlings are grown without picking. For this, the layer of the nutrient substrate should be about 12-14 cm. Under one greenhouse frame, the sowing rate of chernushka seeds is about 15-20 g. The planting technique is ordinary, the row spacing is at least 4 cm.
To create an optimal microclimate for the emergence of seedlings, the temperature in the greenhouse must be maintained at around + 18 … + 20 degrees C. After that, it must be reduced to + 14 … + 16 degrees C. 2-3 days before moving into open ground, the frames are regularly removed from the greenhouses. By this time, the seedlings should already have 3-4 leaves.
A few hours before transplanting to the beds, the soil under the seedlings is moistened. It is also advised to dip the roots of the plant in a solution of clay with a mullein, and water the planting grooves. The embedment depth in open ground is the same as in the greenhouse. The distance between the bow is maintained at 7-10 cm.
Sowing onions for seedlings in room conditions
The disadvantage of sowing under greenhouse frames is that with thickened crops, you will have to thin out the plants. Opponents of such waste in relation to seeds can sow seeds in bowls at room conditions. And, of course, this method is very helpful if there is no greenhouse on the site.
Any plastic container is suitable for sowing. It is filled with a nutrient substrate with a layer of about 7-10 cm. The container should be of such a height that another 3-4 cm remains from the soil surface to the edge of the walls.
The soil surface must be slightly compacted and leveled. Seeds will benefit from watering the soil before sowing with hot water. It is advisable to maintain a distance between the seeds of 1 cm. After laying, another layer of soil is poured on top - about 1 cm thick.
The next step is to create greenhouse conditions for crops. To do this, the containers are placed in plastic bags or covered with plastic caps from cut-off bottles and placed in a very warm place. It is best to give them a corner near the battery. Crop maintenance will consist of daily airing.
Seedlings will appear in five to seven days. This is a signal to remove the shelter and place the nursery in a bright and cooler place. Artificial lighting of onion seedlings will have a very beneficial effect.
Transplantation into open ground is carried out in the phase of 3-4 leaves. The holes are made at a distance of 10 cm from each other. The landing pits are moisturized. Ash can be added to the wells. The immersion depth is not lower than the level where the leaves begin to diverge.
