Hardworking gardeners have to deal with such an unpleasant phenomenon as cracking of pears not so rarely. And there can be a great many reasons for this! Only one thing is certain - cracked pears lose their attractive appearance and become absolutely unsuitable for storage, as they deteriorate much faster, so they must be eaten first of all! So why do these tasty and juicy fruits crack, and is it possible to somehow prevent this phenomenon?
Scab
There can be many reasons why pears crack, but the greatest probability of cracking is characteristic of fruits attacked by scab, and this is perhaps the most common reason today - pears on trees attacked by this extremely unpleasant fungal disease are often covered with rather deep cracks (these cracks occur as a result of the rupture of areas corked under the action of scab).
In order to get rid of the scab and prevent its further development, it is recommended to carry out treatments with various fungicides: as soon as the budding process starts, they immediately resort to the help of Azophos (it is taken in an amount of 100 ml for every ten liters of water), in the process Penncoceb (or Tridex) will do a good job of blooming buds (twenty grams of the product are taken for ten liters of water), before flowering, it makes sense to treat with the drug "Skor" (in the amount of 1, 5 - 2 ml per ten-liter bucket of water), and at the stage of fruit growth, "Strobi" is very useful (it will need 1, 5 - 2 grams for ten liters of water).
Nutrient Deficiency
This reason is also very common - especially often pears forming on trees harden and gradually begin to crack when there is a shortage of boron (most often this happens in gardens laid out on sandy soil). Either feeding with mineral fertilizers containing boron, or foliar treatment of pear plantings (before the start of flowering) using a product called "Ecolist boron" (for ten liters of water, you need to take about 35-40 ml of this preparation) will help to cope with this nuisance.
Sometimes cracking of pears can also provoke a calcium deficiency - ash infusion will be a real salvation in this case.
Cracking-prone varieties
Yes, there are such varieties of pears! These include Boskop, Holsteiner, as well as the incomparable Ingrid Maria and the unsurpassed Cox Orange - as soon as climatic conditions change for the worse for them, they immediately begin to crack! It is important to take into account that rough fruits are much more susceptible to cracking than smooth ones. In principle, if pears crack on trees about once every four to five years, this is quite normal, even if there is no major weather change. If the fruits crack annually, it may make sense to seriously think about changing the variety of pears planted on the site - perhaps either the local climate does not suit it, or it cannot boast of resistance to diseases characteristic of the region.
Weather changes
Sometimes, the physiological changes arising due to too sharp weather changes can lead to cracking of pear fruits. For example, if after a very long period of drought, prolonged rains begin, the pressure in the tissues of the appetizing fruits will gradually increase, and they will begin to crack. If a similar situation arises, experienced gardeners recommend providing the soil with humus - it will help to level the moisture content of the soil. Especially good in this case is the mulching of the trunks with good compost or cut grass.
