Fertilizing fruit trees is a necessary aspect of proper care for them. It is known that such trees need a fairly large amount of a variety of nutrients. They receive carbon through the leaves: the process of photosynthesis takes place in the cells, as a result of which organic matter is formed.
However, there are not many useful elements in the soil, so feeding is made so necessary.
Organic and mineral fertilizers
Organic fertilizers contain many elements necessary for the successful development of plants. Such fertilizers include, for example, bird droppings, manure, peat-manure and many other composts. Organic fertilizers help to reduce the acidity of the soil and improve its structure. Such circumstances lead to the creation of surprisingly comfortable conditions for the roots of trees.
As for mineral fertilizers, nitrogen, ammonium nitrate, as well as ammonium sulfate, phosphorus, potassium are used as potassium salt or potassium chloride.
Most often, gardeners apply fertilizers twice: in the fall and in the spring. Fertilizers from nitrogen are used in the spring, and from potassium and phosphorus in the fall. It is quite natural that fertile soils will require much less fertilizing than other, poorer soils.
When choosing a fertilizer, one should take into account both the age of the plant and the very phase of its development. For example, for fruit-bearing trees, you will need to use more fertilizers than for those trees that are not distinguished by a respectable age and continue to grow.
Nitrogen fertilizers should be applied every year, and the first time they need to be applied in the second year of seedling growth in your garden. Gardeners use compost, manure, phosphorus and potash fertilizers before digging in the autumn season only once every two or three years. The fertilizer depth should be twenty centimeters. However, over time, such a depth will become insufficient, then you will need to choose a depth of thirty to thirty-five centimeters. Many gardeners dig a circular furrow near the seedling, the bottom should also be dug up with half of the top dressing, and the next part of the top dressing must be mixed with the ground and returned to its place. These activities contribute to the cultivation of the soil around the tree. Over time, the roots of the tree will go beyond the planting hole, thus falling into much less suitable soil. Add compost or manure to the resulting groove, as well as superphosphate and potassium chloride. After about two years, it will be necessary to dig a second groove, which will already be outside the first, and the fertilizers must be applied the same.
Top dressing for fruit trees
Of course, top dressing is very effective. However, most gardeners prefer to use top dressing only when fertilizer was not used in the spring or it was, but in a significantly smaller amount.
When crops are expected to be particularly plentiful, fertilizing is most effective. Additional fertilizing is necessary on marginal sandy soils, because fertilizers are quickly washed off there.
For top dressing, a fast-acting fertilizer such as bird droppings or manure is ideal. Manure should be diluted about five times, but it will understand at least ten times. The so-called nitrophoska or ammonium nitrate is also suitable.
As for the time of feeding, it should be carried out immediately after the flowering of trees or after the extra ovary has fallen off. Top dressing too late can cause overgrowth or freezing of the entire tree during particularly cold and long winters.
Urea can also be called excellent dressings: such dressings are classified as foliar and they are leaf-oriented. These events should be carried out in early spring. In August, it will be suitable by spraying with potassium sulfate and superphosphate, all this will lead to the laying of fruit buds. Spraying is required in the evening or in rather cloudy weather, then the leaves will have time to absorb the entire solution before it dries completely.
