The most important thing
The creation of flower beds is a rather complicated and painstaking process, requiring considerable financial costs, some knowledge and a little imagination. It is necessary to familiarize yourself in advance with the principles of constructing compositions and combinations of various flowers and ornamental plants. Before you start creating a flower garden, study the special literature, read the information about the lifespan of certain varieties, their relationship in the soil, humidity and light conditions, flowering time, compatibility with other representatives of the flora and care features. Draw a schematic plan of the future flower garden or use a graphic editor to plan garden plots, since such programs are available to everyone.
Plants for a flower garden
According to their characteristics, flower cultures are divided into three groups: annuals, biennials and perennials. Annuals (alissum, amaranth, bell, kosmeya, lavater, marigolds, etc.) bloom for only one season, they are not able to endure the cold winters of central Russia. They are sown annually from April to May, and they reach the peak of decorativeness in June-September.
Annuals are used in the preparation of almost all types of flower arrangements, in addition to long flowering, they have an incredible variety of colors, leaf texture and inflorescence shapes. Most of the annuals are photophilous; with a lack of sunlight, they lose their decorative effect and cease to bloom. This group of plants also negatively relates to frosts.
Biennials (daisy, neperstyanka, lunaria, Turkish carnation, poppy, forget-me-not, etc.) form a rosette of leaves in the first year after sowing, and a flower in the second year. Unlike annuals, these plants are less demanding and are able to bloom even in shaded areas. Perennial crops (delphinium, daylily, peony, paniculata phlox, buzulnik, cornflower, astilbe, tulip, daffodil, etc.) are the basis of flower beds, they bloom alternately, starting in early spring and ending in late autumn, replacing each other.
Color selection
Recently, monochrome flower beds have been very popular among amateur gardeners; they include plants of the same color tone and differ only in the saturation of shades. Combinations of two colors give a more attractive effect, especially the following shades are harmoniously combined: red and green, yellow and purple, orange and blue. The creation of tricolor flower beds is also a common phenomenon; in this case, the dominant shade is chosen and combined with two less bright ones.
Flower garden structure
When arranging a flower garden, it is important to understand not only color combinations, but also its structure. In classical compositions, tall ornamental plants (palm, dracaena, etc.), including shrubs, are placed in the background, and low ones - in the foreground. On island flower gardens, tall plants are planted in the center. The main volume and originality of appearance are created by medium-sized plants, their height varies from 40 to 80 cm.
Choosing flowers and ornamental plants for the foreground is the final step in creating a flower garden. Their height should be no more than 30 cm, in some cases - 40-50 cm. Preference should be given to compact plants that retain their decorative effect and beautiful bush shape until late autumn (ageratum, pansies, hosta, obriet, verbena, etc.). Do not be afraid to experiment with plant height, tall crops can go beyond the zone of medium-sized ones, and medium-sized ones - to the fore.
Flowering time
Having decided on the height of the plants, it is necessary to proceed with the selection of ornamental crops according to the flowering time. The principle of flowering continuity should be adhered to, the composition should delight the eye of its owner throughout the garden season. For the basis of a flower garden, you need to take plants that are stably decorative, preserving its structure, that is, perennials. Bulbous crops and annuals are also capable of preserving the attractiveness of a flower garden; they can significantly expand the color gamut and hide some flaws. Shrubs are planted as a background.
Many novice growers, trying to achieve flowering continuity, include a large number of varieties of different plants in the composition, thereby overloading it. As a result, the flower garden loses its sense of integrity and becomes somewhat unattractive.
