A beginner's guide with a list of important events to keep in mind in April. About the flower garden, perennials, transplanting, dividing, feeding, about the lawn and seedlings
Active work begins after the snow melts, perhaps in some regions it will be only at the end of April or in May. The indicated dates are indicative. First of all, we remove shelters from conifers, roses and other thermophilic crops. The second half of April is the best time for planting seedlings. Now in more detail …
Lawn, rock garden
After the lawn dries out, carefully comb it out with a fan rake. This should be done in all directions, trying to completely remove all long stems of dry grass. To improve the condition, we spill with fertilizers.
We carefully clean the alpine slide from dry foliage, remove excess or dead plants. If possible, we loosen the ground, fix the stones, if necessary, we add soil. We fill the empty places by dividing and transplanting the existing species. We limit aggressive plants in growth, thin out, reduce their area.
April and flowers
Roses
It all starts with the removal of shelters. Experts say that the rose needs to be opened gradually: by partially lifting the covering material and increasing the ventilation intensity. Complete removal of the shelter is done after the snow has completely melted, when night temperatures are not lower than -5C. If there was sawdust or peat powder under the bushes, we clean everything. We treat bushes and soil with antifungal drugs. We do the pruning before the beginning of the opening of the buds, after that we add top dressing.
Rhododendrons, clematis and other thermophilic
The release of heat-loving shrubs and vines from shelter usually occurs a little later than in roses - at the end of the month. We remove dry branches, some types of clematis need pruning. We thin out the hydrangeas, leave the strongest shoots, remove thin and curved ones. Then loosening is required, the introduction of complex fertilizers. It is advisable to mulch the near-trunk zone.
Irises
Immediately after the snow melts, we clean the root part of last year's debris, slightly bare the rhizome. This technique gives access to the sun's rays - the soil dries out faster, putrefactive bacteria are neutralized, and plant growth is enhanced. After the soil has completely warmed up and dried, add fertile soil (compost, humus), spill it with mineral fertilizer. If there are pests on the irises, it is necessary to sprinkle with any preparation of the Azophos type twice with an interval of a week.
Gladioli
We plant the children until mid-April. The density is 4-5 cm, between the rows - 15 cm. At the end of the month we plant full-fledged bulbs. They already have seedlings, have been treated with growth stimulants, bactericidal mixtures, or kept in a manganese solution for 20 minutes. We choose a sunny place, the distance in the rows is 20-25 cm, we keep 10-15 cm between the plants, we deepen it by 10 cm.
If there was a division of the onions by the number of sprouts, treat the wound with coal powder, greenery. Remember that gladioli love changing places - do not plant on the same ridge for more than two years.
Transplanting and dividing plants in April
Until the buds have opened, you can safely start transplanting ornamental crops that have grown too much and require thinning. If your goal is a bush, then pruning may be required before that. Try not to bare the root and transfer it with a clod of earth.
In the last decade, seedlings of cold-resistant annuals (daisies, calendula, forget-me-nots, viola) can be planted on flower beds. We divide and plant irises, primrose bushes, hostu, daylily, phlox.
