Erigeron (lat. Erigeron) - shade-tolerant light-loving perennial from the Astrovye family. The second name is small petals.
Description
Erigeron is a rhizome herbaceous perennial, endowed with the ability to form rather loose bushes from thirty to seventy centimeters high. The stems of this plant are often lodging.
The basal leaves of erigeron fold into fairly compact rosettes, and the inflorescences of this handsome man look like baskets, both single and collected in luxurious paniculate or corymbose inflorescences. All reed marginal flowers usually boast lilac, cream, white, as well as purple, violet or pink, and the tubular middle small flowers are most often yellow. As for flowering, depending on the species, it covers the period from June to October.
The name of this plant is derived from two Greek words: the first is eri, which translates as "early", and the second is ugeron, which translates as "old man." Such an interesting name is due to the rather rapid maturation of achenes, equipped with slightly grayish crests.
The genus Erigeron is quite numerous - there are about four hundred species in it. At the same time, the most common species is considered to be beautiful erigeron.
Where grows
The vast majority of erigeron varieties grow predominantly in the North American territories. Quite often, this beautiful plant is found in Africa or Asia.
Usage
In ornamental gardening, only three or four types of erigeron are mainly used, however, many gardeners do not give up the idea of growing luxurious hybrids. Erigeron will look great as part of rocky slides, mixborders and all kinds of mixed flower beds. And the best partner plants for him will be Veronica, Heuchera, as well as Liatris, Geranium and Sword-leaved Elecampane.
Growing and caring
Erigeron is famous for its lack of demand, so it will not be difficult to grow him. It is best to choose sunny areas for planting it, however, with light shading, it will also grow excellently. Erigeron feels great on rich garden soils, while he absolutely cannot stand excessive waterlogging. However, it should be watered often enough as the soil it grows on must be well-hydrated at all times (especially during the hottest months).
Erigeron does not need top dressing at all, the main thing is not to forget to cut off its shoots at the end of flowering. By the way, this plant boasts a very impressive winter hardiness.
Erigeron is propagated by dividing the bushes, which is produced either in the spring or closer to the end of summer. Its reproduction is also quite acceptable by sowing seeds in greenhouses in March-April or in open ground before winter, but it is important to take into account that the seeds of this plant are characterized by a very low germination capacity.
Erigeron is very resistant to pests, but it can still be affected by various ailments: all kinds of pathogenic fungi can provoke the appearance of unsightly spots or rust on the leaves, which in turn can lead to the death of beautiful plants. In the event of a similar situation, it is necessary to carry out treatment with effective fungicides, and heavily infected plants should be eliminated from the site as soon as possible. In addition, erigeron can also attack the grape powdery mildew that causes the formation of white mold - you can cope with this scourge with the help of various drugs to get rid of oidum.
