Shiryash (lat. Eremurus) Is a flowering light-loving perennial from the Liliaceae family. The second name of the plant is eremurus.

Description

Shiryash is a very spectacular plant, the height of which ranges from seventy centimeters to two meters. Its short rhizomes are often surrounded from above by the remnants of old leaves, and the crowded fleshy roots of this handsome man can be both spindle-shaped thickened and cylindrical.

Single leafless stems of the shiryash emerge immediately from the basal rosettes and bear flower brushes. And numerous flat linear-triangular leaves of this plant are always keeled from below and can be either narrow or wide.

The bright tall inflorescences of the shiryash are so beautiful that you can't take your eyes off them - the drooping flowers of this handsome man gather in bizarre cylindrical brushes, the length of which can reach a meter. The wide-open flowers of the shiryash boast the presence of a huge number of protruding long stamens, and their color can be either yellow, orange or white, or purple or pink. All flowers sit in the axils of the bracts strictly one at a time. As for the flowering of this plant, it, depending on the variety of shiryash, falls on the period from May to August.

In total, the genus Shiryash has about sixty species, some of which need protection.

Where grows

Shiryash is especially widespread in the semi-deserts and steppes of Central Asia. Quite often, this plant is found in the southern part of Europe.

Usage

In culture, about forty species and hybrid varieties of shiryash are currently being grown. At the same time, yellow-flowered species are considered the most stable in the middle zone: Altai shiryash, narrow-leaved shiryash, red shiryash and beautiful shiryash.

And since by the middle of summer the shiryash loses its decorative effect, it is best to plant this tall handsome man in group plantings or in the background in mixborders. Shiryash perfectly combines with a number of other tall plants: mullein, muzzle, daylily, etc. And also its inflorescences are excellent in cutting!

Some varieties of shiryash, for example, Regel's shiryash, powerful shiryash, Olga's shiryash and Altai shiryash are also used as food and dye plants. So, the roots and leaves of Shiryash Regel color silk or wool in olive, yellow and pink shades pleasant to the eye! And from the roots of the representative shiryash, glue is obtained, since it contains the most valuable substitute for gum arabic - a polysaccharide called eremuran. Such glue is actively used in shoemaking and bookbinding. By the way, it is possible that it was he who was part of a great many ancient Central Asian buildings, an impressive part of which has been quite safely preserved to this day!

Growing and caring

Most species of shiryash can be safely grown without digging them up in the summer for the purpose of drying. Ideally, these plants should be planted in sunny areas that boast neutral rocky soils.

When dry weather is established, the shiryash is watered from spring to the very middle of the summer season, after which watering is stopped in all cases. And for the winter, a beautiful plant is covered with either leaf litter or spruce branches.

Shiryash propagation is carried out in August by dividing the bushes. It is quite permissible to propagate this handsome man with seeds (the latter are usually sown before winter), but in this case, the seedlings will bloom for the first time only after four to five years.
