Tail (lat. Hippuris) - an aquatic plant belonging to the plantain family. This plant also has one more name - water pine. This name was received by him for its striking resemblance to miniature Christmas trees and pines.
Description
The tail is an incredibly slender aquatic perennial, characterized by a relatively small size (about fifteen to twenty centimeters) and endowed with straight, hollow and non-branching stems. All stems extend from creeping underground rhizomes, and the leaves at the tail are always linear and whorled.
During the flowering period, this plant throws out tiny flowers located in the leaf axils. Moreover, all flowers are unisexual - this is due to the fact that their stamens with pistils are very poorly developed. And only specimens growing in the air are capable of blooming. By the way, you can admire the flowering of the water pine during the period from June to August.
The fruits of the tail are truncated drupe tips, growing up to 1 mm wide and up to 2 mm long.
The seeds of this aquatic beauty are most often spread with the help of birds - they stick to their bodies along with silt. This is what determines the fairly wide distribution of the tail. However, the seeds are often spread by the current.
Where grows
The tail beetle grows almost everywhere, from the tundra to Central Asia and the Far East. The water pine feels best in shallow water, although it can grow well under water, however, in this case it will be shallower. In general, the tail is considered a marsh plant.
Usage
In herbal medicine, water pine is actively used to heal wounds - it perfectly helps to stop both external and internal bleeding. And this plant also helps to cope with stomach ulcers and is an excellent soothing agent for a wide variety of skin inflammations. The water infusion of this handsome man is recommended to be used for diarrhea.
Water pine is also used externally - its crushed leaves with stalks are applied to skin tumors (both benign and malignant), as well as to places of severe bruises.
Due to its ability to absorb large amounts of methane, the tailgate helps to significantly improve air quality in scenic wetlands. However, it is also considered a weed that greatly impedes the flow of water in grooves and rivers.
Growing and caring
The tail is most often grown in small ponds or in aquariums. True, the first option is considered the most suitable. It is advisable to take the soil that is highly silted and sandy - a mixture formed by clay and garden soil with sand mixed in equal proportions is best suited for growing a water pine.
This plant grows equally well both in the shade and in the sun, and it reproduces mainly through division.
The tail is a seasonal plant, so its active life occurs at the beginning of spring, when the water in the reservoirs warms up to at least eight degrees.
The ideal parameters for the full development of the tail will be: stiffness in the range from four to eighteen degrees, acidity - from 5.0 to 8.0, and temperature - in the range from twenty to twenty-two degrees. Lighting is required for a water pine, and the duration of its daylight hours should be about ten to twelve hours a day. If you pamper a beautiful plant with overhead lighting, then it will begin to grow at a truly lightning speed, and upon reaching the water surface it will not stop growing above it.
If the tail is to be grown on swampy shores, it is best to either plant it directly in containers or use growth restraints. And containers are allowed to be immersed to a depth of one meter.
