The tail, also called the water pine, is a predominantly marsh plant. It feels best in shallow water, but it can also grow under water, only in this case, this extremely pretty plant will be smaller. It will not be difficult to meet a water pine, from the tundra to Central Asia and the Far East. And the name "water pine" was given to the tail for its resemblance to tiny spruces and pines
Getting to know the plant
The tail is a very slender aquatic perennial of relatively small size (about 15 - 20 cm), endowed with straight unbranched hollow stems and linear whorled leaves. All stalks extend from creeping underground rhizomes.
During flowering, the tail releases funny little flowers located in the leaf sinuses. Due to the fact that the stamens and pistils are rather poorly developed in flowers, they are all unisexual. It is noteworthy that plants growing exclusively in the air are capable of blooming. A lovely water pine usually blooms from June to August.
The fruits of the tail are drupes with truncated tops, which are approximately 1 mm wide and 2 mm long.
The spread of tail tail seeds most often occurs with the help of birds - along with silt, the seeds stick to the body of birds. It is this feature that is due to the rather widespread distribution of this aquatic plant. Also, seeds can spread and flow.
Using the tail
The tail is used in herbal medicine for the early healing of wounds. It is a great helper in stopping both external and internal bleeding. The tail also helps to heal from stomach ulcers, and in case of skin inflammations, it will become an excellent sedative. Well, the water infusion of the tail is used for diarrhea.
The tail is also used externally - its crushed leaves and stalks are applied to skin tumors (both benign and malignant) and to bruised places.
It is noteworthy that this plant, due to its ability to absorb methane in large quantities, significantly improves air quality in wetlands. At the same time, it can simultaneously be a weed that impedes the flow of water in grooves and rivers.
How to grow
You can grow a tail tail both in small ponds and in aquariums. However, the first option will still be more suitable. It is recommended to take the soil is highly silted, sandy. The ideal option would be a mixture of clay, garden soil and sand mixed in equal proportions.
The tail breeds mainly by division and grows equally well both in the shade and in the sun.
Since the tail is a seasonal plant, its active life coincides with the onset of spring, when the water warms up to at least eight degrees. As a rule, the bushes of this plant growing in reservoirs with stagnant water first develop - in such reservoirs the water warms up much faster. If you want to grow a tail in aquariums, you should take it from reservoirs during this period - it will be much easier for a wonderful aquatic inhabitant to acclimate in aquariums, because the water temperature there is much higher than the water temperature in reservoirs.
For the full development of the tail, the ideal water parameters will be: acidity - within pH 5, 0 - 8, 0, hardness - dH 4 - 18 degrees, and temperature - from 20 to 22 degrees. Lighting for the tail should be fairly bright, and the duration of its daylight hours per day should be about ten to twelve hours. If you provide the plant with bright overhead lighting, then it will begin to grow at an incredible rate, and when it reaches the water surface, it will continue to grow above it.
To prevent the tail growing in the aquarium from hibernating, you will need to install side lighting, but even in this case it is extremely difficult to keep the bushes of this unique plant in their original form.
If the tail is planned to be grown on swampy shores, then it is better to plant it in containers or use growth restraints. Containers are allowed to be immersed to a depth of up to one meter.
