Garden primrose is one of the perennial primroses. In total, there are about five hundred different varieties in this genus, but only some species have become widespread in culture.

The garden primrose is especially valuable due to its decorative and bright flowers. Moreover, some species and varieties of this plant also have a surprisingly pleasant aroma. It is noteworthy that this plant is grown not only for the purpose of decorating a garden, but also as a room culture. Also, the leaves of the garden primrose are eaten.

Among the most common varieties of this plant, the following should be noted: ear, common, Sikkim, pubescent, polyanthus, candelabra, toothed, Japanese. Julia, Florinda, Voronov, Biss, Siebold and garden spring primrose.

Description of the features of care and cultivation of garden primrose

For the most favorable development of this plant, it will be necessary to select shaded areas on which there will be fertile soils, with a slightly acidic or somewhat alkaline reaction. It is noteworthy that some types of garden primrose are able to develop well in sunny areas. Before planting, it is important to prepare the soil: this requires adding compost or complex mineral fertilizers to the soil. It is important to remember that heavy soils are extremely unsuitable for growing this plant, for this reason, such soils should be improved by applying sand and organic fertilizers. Some varieties of this plant require good drainage.

It is worth noting that the garden primrose is one of the moisture-loving plants. For this reason, the plant needs regular watering, and drying out of the soil is highly undesirable. In the autumn period, watering will need to be reduced, which is necessary so that the plant can prepare for the onset of the winter season. Throughout the season, you will need to do three times feeding the garden primrose. As for fertilizing with mineral fertilizers, this should be done in early spring, when the snow has not yet had time to completely melt, as well as in the autumn period and in the very middle of summer. This plant begins to bloom in early spring, most often in the month of April. It is noteworthy that some varieties of garden primrose can bloom again. For the winter period, the plants need to be covered with dry straw or spruce branches. However, some varieties of this plant do not need shelter: for example, Julia's primrose.

Reproduction of garden primrose

Reproduction of this plant occurs through cuttings and seeds, as well as by dividing the bush. As for the propagation of seeds, this will take time, as well as some specific skills. The seeds must be fresh, otherwise germination will be very poor. Sowing seeds should be done in March or April. This will require containers in which the sterilized potting mix will be. Also, such landings should be covered with a film.

It should be noted that the seeds can be sown directly into open ground, but this should be done in the autumn period. From time to time, such crops should be watered: the soil must always be kept moist. From time to time, the seedlings should be ventilated, while removing the film. After the appearance of two or three leaves, garden primroses dive into separate containers. At the end of May, the plants will grow slightly and then they are already planted in a permanent place in the open ground. The distance between the plants should be about fifteen to twenty centimeters: everything will depend on the variety of garden primrose. It should be remembered that when choosing propagation by means of seeds, the varietal characteristics of this plant will be lost, however, if wild varieties were chosen, then all the features will remain.
