Beckmania ordinary (lat. Beckmannia eruciformis) - a representative of the Beckmania genus, which belongs to the Cereals family. The species is widespread in European countries, the USA and Russia. Also, the plant is sometimes called meadow bison, marsh wheatgrass. Typical habitats are slopes, meadows, river banks.
Plant characteristic
Beckmania vulgaris is represented by perennial herbaceous plants, reaching a height of 1.5 m. They are characterized by long creeping roots and a strongly leafy stem, thickened at the base. The foliage is flat, rough to the touch, green or yellowish-green, pointed, about 5-7 mm wide.
Inflorescences are one-sided, endowed with spike-shaped branches, in length do not exceed 30 cm. Spikelets are obovate, two-flowered, arranged in two rows, tiled. The scales of the spikelets are saccular, swollen. Heart-shaped caryopses, yellowish-white in color, have small spines. The flowering of Bekmania vulgaris begins in the third decade of June - the first decade of July.
Growing conditions
Beckmania vulgaris is an unpretentious plant. Calmly tolerates long-term flooding. Also, the plant boasts high winter-hardy properties. The presence of salt in the soil does not frighten this type of beckmania. Even under unfavorable conditions, it forms lush thickets. It should be noted that Beckmania vulgaris is an early growing cereal, while quickly gaining green mass even after the mowing procedure.
Usage
Beckmania vulgaris is a fodder and hay grass. It is suitable for eating herbivores. However, the stems and foliage are edible before flowering. Immediately after flowering, the plant coarsens. The yield of common beckmania hay is large, up to 5 tons per hectare.
The only thing is that beckmania has a bitter taste, so it is mixed with other herbs. But on the other hand, beckmania is highly digestible. The common beckmania is especially loved by cattle, but small livestock also eats it. It should be noted that beckmania has a positive effect on the condition of the soil. She contributes to her recovery.
