Iris calamus also known as iris yellow. This plant is perennial, while its height can reach up to one hundred centimeters in length. The rhizome of this plant is thick and branched, and the stem is erect and branched at the top. The lower leaves of the plant are linear-xiphoid, and the upper ones are linear-lanceolate, while the width of such leaves ranges from one centimeter to three, and the leaves are bright green in color.

The flowers of this plant are collected in a racemose inflorescence, in addition to this, there are also single apical inflorescences. The perianth will include six leaves, while the outer leaves have an orange spot in the middle and a whole network of dark veins, such leaves are ovoid in shape and narrowed into a marigold. As for the inner leaves, they will be linear and erect. This plant blooms from May to July. The iris fruit is an oblong and multi-seeded capsule.

This plant grows in nature near water bodies, in damp meadows, in light forests and even in coastal shrubs.

In ancient times, with the help of the rhizome of this plant, they stained the skin: if you cut the rhizomes of the iris calamus, then the light cut will begin to darken over time.

The spread of seeds in nature occurs with the help of water, thus the plant has a very wide distribution area and is able to cover vast territories around large rivers. Waterfowl also help spread the iris via seeds. It is noteworthy that the peel of the seeds does not get wet when it gets into the water. Actually, this property of seeds allows them to stay afloat.

This type of iris is capable of withstanding even the most prolonged flooding, if the plant grows along water bodies. However, with a lack of moisture, this plant can very significantly lose its decorative properties.

Diseases and pests

In any case, when growing calamus iris, it is very important to pay attention to the plant and when the slightest signs of a disease appear, appropriate measures should be taken. Such a pest as gladiolus thrips is considered the most dangerous for the calamus iris, while this pest attacks the plant most often.

As for reproduction, then, as already mentioned, there is also a method of reproduction through seeds. In open ground, seeds should be planted to a depth of about one and a half to two centimeters. Such measures will prevent the rise of seeds to the soil surface during watering or under the condition of heavy rains. In addition, the reproduction of the calamus iris can also occur by dividing the rhizome: the rhizome should be divided into parts, each of which should contain buds.

Among other things, if we are talking about plants located near water bodies, then this option is considered the most budgetary. Iris transplants will not be required for about five or even ten years, which greatly facilitates the care of this plant. a height of two meters for the calamus iris will become possible if the soil contains a high humus content and a sufficient level of moisture is always maintained.
