Calamus marsh - the origin of this name is associated with the Greek word, which means "eyeball". This is due to the fact that since ancient times calamus has been used to get rid of various eye diseases.
Description of the plant
Marsh calamus is a perennial plant, the height of which can even exceed one meter. The plant's rhizome is quite powerful and fleshy, its length reaches about fifty centimeters. Calamus leaves are simple and linear. The plant blooms in July, and its flowers are painted in greenish-yellow tones.
The medicinal raw material of marsh calamus are rhizomes, on which there are no small roots. The collection takes place in the autumn period. Raw materials should be cut into pieces, washed and then left to dry. You can store such raw materials for one year.
The rhizome of the plant contains essential oil, tannins, ascorbic acid and numerous resins, as well as starch and gum. Calamus leaves contain tannins and essential oils.
The rhizomes of the plant are dug up, then cut lengthwise into pieces of about ten to twenty centimeters. Such raw materials should be dried in dark places.
The healing properties of calamus marsh
It is believed that an infusion made from calamus rhizome is able to increase appetite, and also helps to improve digestion. These properties are very important for those who have problems with decreased gastric secretion. Calamus is often found in a variety of drugs intended for the treatment of gastric diseases.
Calamus rhizomes and the extract of this plant are very often used as a tonic for diseases of the nervous system. The effectiveness of such treatment is associated with the sedative and analgesic effects of calamus.
As for Tibetan medicine, calamus is widely used here as a tonic and even an antihelminthic agent. In China, calamus is used for rheumatism, as well as as a tonic and aphrodisiac. In Poland, calamus is even used against hair loss.
In order to prevent influenza, you should chew the calamus rhizomes several times a day.
To prepare an infusion from calamus, you will need to take two tablespoons of raw materials, which must be poured with one glass of hot water. Then the resulting mixture should be boiled in a water bath for about forty-five minutes, after which the mixture is filtered and boiled water is added. Such an infusion should be taken in a quarter of a glass three to four times a day, it is recommended to do this half an hour before the start of a meal. In this case, the infusion will have to be preheated.
It is also recommended to chew the calamus rhizomes for pain in the teeth and in order to strengthen the gums. In addition, calamus can also help with heartburn.
As for dentistry, calamus is used for glossitis, periodontal disease, and gingivitis. As a pain reliever and antiseptic, it is recommended to prepare the following water infusion of calamus: pour one tablespoon of plant rhizomes with one glass of boiling water.
Fresh calamus juice and rhizome tincture are good for improving both vision and memory. In Belarus, calamus rhizome is considered an important drug for the treatment of thyroid diseases. Also, a decoction prepared on the basis of calamus is also used for depression, various neuroses and neurasthenia. To prepare such a decoction, you will need to mix calamus, mint, sorrel and St. John's wort in equal proportions. One tablespoon of this mixture should be poured with one glass of boiling water.
The resulting broth is recommended to drink three times a day, one tablespoon about fifteen minutes before the start of a meal.
