Regel's onion (lat. Allium regelii) - a perennial herb of the genus Onion of the Onion family, which is highly decorative. Natural area - mountainous regions of Turkmenistan, north-western regions of Iran and Afghanistan. Typical habitats are gravelly slopes and sandy deserts.
Characteristics of culture
Regel's onion is a plant with a bulb of a spherical bulb, reaching a diameter of 1-2 cm. The shells are leathery or papery, blackish. Stem up to 70 cm high. Leaves are linear-lanceolate, slightly rough along the edge, up to 1.5 cm wide. Flowers are collected in loose, few-flowered, tuft or hemispherical umbrellas. The perianth is narrow bell-shaped, pink. Tepals are narrow, lanceolate, sharp, slightly curled as they grow. The fruit is a broad-ovate capsule up to 8 mm in diameter.
The subtleties of growing
Regel's onion is a very unpretentious plant, it multiplies easily and does not require special care. But to improve the decorative qualities, several important rules should be observed. The growing area should be well lit and protected from cold winds. In the shade, the Regel's onion does not bloom well, and its bulbs rot. Plants readily develop on loose, fertile, permeable, neutral soils. The culture of stagnant water does not accept, this can also lead to rotting of the bulbs. Regel's onions are resistant to drought, but they need rare watering.
This type of onion is propagated by seeds and bulbs. The second method is the most common among gardeners. To obtain planting material, the mother plant is dug up (immediately after flowering and yellowing of the leaves) and the children are separated from the main bulb. The division is recommended to be carried out at least once every 3-5 years. Planting depth should be greater than the diameter of the bulb. The optimal distance between plants is 10-20 cm.
Seed propagation takes longer than vegetative propagation. In addition, such plants bloom only in the third year after sowing. Seeds are harvested immediately after ripening and sown outdoors in late September - early October. With the onset of cold weather, the ridge with crops is carefully mulched with sawdust or peat, in the spring the old mulch is removed. Mulching is optional in the southern regions. In regions with frequent and heavy rains, plants are dug up annually, since it is exposed to rot of a different nature, and need to be dried, otherwise death cannot be avoided.
Care
There is nothing difficult in caring for Regel's onions. These are standard procedures for all members of the Onion family, or rather, weeding, watering, fertilizing and loosening the aisles. Mulching is desirable, because a layer of organic material will protect the soil from overheating, retain moisture for a longer period and get rid of malicious weeds. For the winter, Regel's onions are sheltered only in regions with cold and snowless winters.
Application
The Regel bow is very decorative. It is suitable for garden design. Roses, delphiniums, primroses, hosts, cuffs, aquilegia, irises, peonies, poppies, geraniums, purse and euphorbia can become his allies. Low-growing Regel onions look perfect in rocky gardens and in the foreground of mixborders. Tall ones are good in group plantings on the lawn. It is not forbidden to grow Regel onions in containers that can be used to decorate gazebos and terraces.
