Onion moly (lat. Allium moly) - a representative of the Onion family, characterized by increased decorative properties. The plant is known as Golden Garlic. It is found naturally in many European countries. In Russia, it is cultivated as an ornamental crop.
Characteristics of culture
Onion Moli is a perennial herb with an edible spherical bulb reaching a diameter of 1.5-2.5 cm. Stems are straight, cylindrical, up to 30 cm high. Leaves are green with a bluish bloom, lanceolate, flat, wide, drooping to the tip. The flowers are large, yellow, star-shaped, collected in flat or hemispherical umbellate inflorescences, the sizes of which vary from 4 to 7 cm. Flowering occurs in late May - early June. Onion Moli has a pronounced garlic scent. In one place, a culture can grow and develop normally up to 10-15 years.
The subtleties of growing
Moli's onion is an undemanding plant, but it blooms better in sunny and semi-shaded areas. In the dense shade, the bulbs rot and, accordingly, do not form dense foliage and fascinating inflorescences. Soils for growing crops are preferable fertile, light, water and air-permeable, well-drained, moderately moist with a slightly acidic pH level.
Onions are propagated by Moli most often with bulbs, children and delenki. The first method is less laborious and effective than the others. Reproduction by children also does not cause any particular problems, the only thing is that their collection of planting material is carried out 2-3 years after planting the mother plant. The seed method is difficult, since the seedlings of the culture are weak and very small, and it is very difficult to work with them. Moreover, specimens grown from seeds only bloom for 3-4 years.
Planting and dividing the bushes is recommended in early spring or autumn. In the second case, a month before the onset of persistent cold weather. All operations are carried out in cloudy weather. The scheme of planting Moli onions is 10 * 10 cm or 15 * 15 cm, which largely depends on the size of the bulbs. Onions should not be planted too often, since plants form quite voluminous clumps during the growth process, and they will not tolerate thickening.
Caring for the Moli onion consists of regular watering. It is not recommended to allow stagnation of water and overdrying, this will have a detrimental effect on the general appearance. The plant is transplanted once every 4-5 years, this is necessary in order to avoid thickening. The transplant is carried out when most of the leaves of the plants dry out. The inflorescences are removed immediately after flowering. In regions with cold winters with the onset of stable cold weather, plantings are mulched with natural material. In the southern regions, mulching is not necessary.
Application
Moli's onions are used for food, medicinal and decorative purposes. Plants are spectacular and look great in group plantings along with flowering crops. Often they are used to create independent compositions, because bright yellow inflorescences can bring zest to any garden corner. The Moli bow looks great as small dotted curtains along the border of the border, and is also suitable for decorating an alpine slide, rockery and other rocky gardens. Especially harmoniously, the Moli onions will fit into compositions composed of plants with blue and blue inflorescences.
