Multi-tiered onion (lat. Allium proliferum) Is a perennial plant of the Alliaceae family. A hybrid of Allium cepa and Allium fistulosum. The multi-tiered onion is considered to be a vegetable suitable for growing in early spring. The exact place of origin of this type of onion is not known for certain, it is likely that the homeland is China, from where the plant came to Europe in the Middle Ages. In Russia, the plant is known under the names Canadian onion, horned onion, viviparous onion, Egyptian onion, catavissa.
Characteristics of cultur
The multi-tiered onion is a herbaceous plant that is a close relative of the batun onion and differs from it in the structure of the flower arrow. The leaves are dark green with a waxy bloom, hollow, tubular, wide, up to 20 cm long. The inflorescence is located on a tubular arrow up to 1 m high, which subsequently forms air bulbs. As a rule, up to 2-4 levels of flower arrows are formed with 3-30 air bulbs. The root system is powerful, subject to optimal growing conditions, it grows strongly, for this reason it needs thinning.
The multi-tiered bow is characterized by increased cold resistance, it hibernates without shelter without any problems even at -50C. Young leaves can withstand frosts down to -7C. It can grow in the same place for 5-6 years. Negatively refers to sudden changes in temperature, with prolonged early spring thaws and subsequent frosts, onions die. The multi-tiered bow starts to grow early enough, usually 7-10 days earlier than the batun onion.
Growing conditions
Plots for growing multi-tiered onions are preferable to be well heated, early free from snow cover and cleared of perennial rhizome weeds. Soils are desirable fertile, light, moderately moist. Plants do not accept acidic and heavy clay soils. The best precursors are cucumbers, cabbage, squash, potatoes, beets and legumes.
Reproduction and planting
The multi-tiered onion is propagated by air bulbs (bulbs), basal bulbs and dividing the bush. A plot for culture is prepared in the fall: the soil is dug up, rotted compost, superphosphate and any potassium fertilizer are added. Acidic soils need preliminary liming; on heavy soils, coarse sand is introduced for digging. Air bulbs are planted in the ground in an ordinary way in late August - early September. This planting period ensures 100% survival and rooting. The distance between plants should be 10-12 cm, and between rows - 20-25 cm.
In spring, multi-tiered onions are propagated by dividing the bush. The bush is divided into several parts and immediately planted in the ground in rows with an interval of 24-25 cm. Often crops are propagated by basal bulbs that form in plants in the second year after planting. Planting is preferable to carry out after rain, in this case, the bulbs immediately begin to actively develop.
Care
Care for multi-tiered onions consists of the following procedures: weeding, watering, feeding and thinning. Long-term plantings after snow melt are fed with urea and treated with Epina Extra solution. This approach increases resilience in stressful situations. Two weeks later, the plants are sprayed with Ferovit solution to enhance the process of photosynthesis. The first thinning is carried out when the plants reach 25 cm, then - as needed. After each cut, the multi-tiered onions are fed with nitrophos and treated with Cytovit solution.
Plants are watered 3-4 times per season at the rate of 10-15 liters per 1 square meter, with prolonged drought, the amount of watering is increased. The arrows of the onion are thin and unstable; under the weight of the air bulbs, they lie down or break, so the plants need a garter to the trellises. As you know, the root system of a culture grows rapidly, usually by 3-4 years. If it was decided to leave the onion in the same place for a longer period, thinning is carried out. In one nest, 2-3 basal onions are left, the rest of the onions are used as planting material for forcing or for food purposes.

Multi-tiered Bow Or How To Make Your Garden Bigger
I want to plant as many different vegetables as possible in my garden. But often the area that can be allotted for the beds is not happy with its size, and you still have to give up something. However, the multi-tiered bow seems to have been created by nature itself in order to save space. This unusual plant, crowned with bulbs at the top, forms more and more tiers on them. And thus, one bed, as if by magic, turns into three, or even four new ones! And borrow
