Kostenets (lat. Asplenium) - decorative deciduous perennial from the Kostentsovy family. The second name of the plant is asplenium.
Description
Kostenets is a herbaceous terrestrial, as well as a rocky or epiphytic low plant, equipped with creeping or vertical short rhizomes and forked or feathery leaves. The height of this plant can vary from twenty centimeters to one meter.
The sori located along the lateral veins running along the lower surfaces of the leaves are reliably covered with linear membranous induction.
It is noteworthy that none of the varieties of this plant ever bloom at all. And the ripening of the spores usually occurs in the period from September to June. In total, about seven hundred different types of kostenets are currently known.
Where grows
It will not be difficult to meet Kostenets in almost all geographic zones of our vast globe without exception. In Russia and in the adjacent territories, only about twenty varieties of this plant (mainly rocky) grow. And the homeland of this spectacular fern is considered to be the tropical rainforests of Africa, Asia and Australia.
Usage
Kostenets is ideal for decorating a wide variety of closed showcases with relatively small amounts of sunlight and warm air. It will look just as good in rocky gardens, alpine slides or on retaining walls. Quite often and very successfully, Kostenets is also grown as a houseplant. The nesting bone can boast of a particularly high decorative effect.
Growing and caring
Kostenets feels great both in partial shade and in the shade, however, when planting it, it is important not to forget that it is a dry-loving plant. Since it tolerates locking in the winter period very, very badly, it is recommended to place it in rocky gorges, planting a beautiful fern on sandy soils enriched with humus. And, of course, good drainage is essential in this case! In general, the Kostenets prefers garden soils and, depending on the variety, can be both calcephilous and calcephobic. Such a fern will grow especially well in a loose substrate with the addition of a very impressive amount of peat.
The kostenets are watered with softened warm water, and such watering should be carried out regularly. Also, in the summer season, plants are pampered with high-quality dressings twice a month. You can feed them in winter, but not more often than once a month. And this fern must be sprayed systematically.
In winter, it is recommended to place the kostenets in partial shade, while the temperature of its content should be about sixteen degrees. The most important thing is to keep the soil warm. By the way, for its constant maintenance in a warm form, you can systematically turn on a mat specially designed for heating the soil under the flower pot. In the event that the air turns out to be too dry or cold, the edges of the leaves of the bone will immediately turn brown. And in general, with improper care, this handsome man can quickly lose his attractiveness.
And this fern is propagated either by spores, or by dividing large bunches in the spring. By the way, reproduction by spores is a very time-consuming process. And in some varieties of bone marrow, special brood buds are formed on the leaves, intended for vegetative reproduction.
