You can still plant in August. And now it is time to plant seedlings of unusual kohlrabi cabbage into the ground. If at an earlier date it was grown through seedlings in greenhouses and greenhouses, then for planting in beds in August, seeds of early ripening varieties are sown in a nursery in July
Preparation of a plot for seedlings of kohlrabi cabbage
For planting kohlrabi from a film nursery into the ground, those areas that are freed up after potatoes, and even better - peas, are suitable. These magical legumes, by their mere presence, fertilize the soil, enriching it with nitrogen compounds useful to the growing vegetable. But this does not mean that after the peas, the garden can not be fertilized. It is nevertheless recommended to prepare the soil further one more time before replanting the seedlings.
First of all, land cultivation consists in digging. It does not need to be done too deep, it is enough to shovel enough to mix the fertilizers with the top fertile soil layer. If manure was introduced under the precursors of kohlrabi, it is enough to fertilize the site with ammonium nitrate. Fertilizer is embedded in the soil at the rate of 0.3 kg per 10 square meters. When more than two years have passed since the introduction of organic matter into the beds, it is recommended to add 0.3 kg of superphosphate and potassium salt each (for the same area).
Transplanting seedlings
In order for the seedlings to take root quickly, they must be sufficiently well developed. Kohlrabi reaches this age by about 35-40 days. By this time, she should already have formed at least 3 true leaves. Do not overexpose it in the nursery. When more than 4 leaves have developed on the seedlings of the plant, the processes that should take place at the permanent place of growing the vegetable are already started.
Kohlrabi are planted with double-row ribbons, which are outlined at a distance of 30 cm. Row spacing is left twice as much. An interval of 15-20 cm in a row is made between the seedlings.
Caring for kohlrabi in the garden
Outwardly, kohlrabi resembles a root crop, and this can mislead an inexperienced gardener who has never taken care of such a crop before. In fact, its round head is a stem grower, and there is no need to huddle it up. It is this part of kohlrabi that is edible, and it tastes like a cabbage stump. But the kohlrabi stalk is much juicier, in addition, it is more fragrant and tender. However, if you make such a mistake as hilling, it coarsens, the structure becomes fibrous, woody. In addition, the cabbage fly larva can lurk in the soil. And the hungry pest will not miss the moment before you feast on your cabbage. Instead of hilling, only soil loosening is carried out. Also, kohlrabi watering is required.
Top dressing of kohlrabi, which was planted in August, is carried out with a garden mixture, an aqueous solution of urea. Those plantings that are about to come from the beds are no longer fed with nitrogen fertilizers in the last month of summer. The cabbage reaches the stage of technical ripeness when its stem plant is about 5-7 cm in diameter. Kohlrabi is harvested selectively, in several approaches, since it develops unevenly. And they monitor the degree of softness of the stalk. If the vegetable sits in the garden for longer than it should, you can easily miss the right time, because the stems coarse very quickly.
The danger for kohlrabi is not only the cabbage fly, but also other pests, as well as diseases. It must be protected from whitefly, the ubiquitous slugs. Cabbage keel can kill plants. Do not mind trying kohlrabi and rodents.
Cabbage is well stored in the cellar in winter. The optimum room temperature will be + 1 ° C. Before storing, you need to clean the kohlrabi from the leaves. Stem fruits are laid in layers, sprinkling them with sand. You can harvest kohlrabi by freezing. Just before that, the stem plant must be washed and finely chopped. Then the pieces are laid out in a thin layer in plastic bags and placed in the freezer.
Kohlrabi is consumed both raw and after heat treatment. Slices of cabbage, the stem of which has a purple color, look very aesthetically pleasing. But light green specimens are no less valuable. Regardless of the color of the stem, it is rich in vitamins. Kohlrabi is fried and stewed. It can be used to cook soups in milk. Original dishes are obtained from stuffed heads.
