Spread naphthalene or "Antimol" between things and put them away in the closet … - in principle, this way can be limited. But for the convenience and safety of clothes, it is better to follow simple everyday advice and ideas. We share a few tips and tricks for home storage
1. Choosing the right container
Store your off-season clothing in clear containers. This makes it much easier to find a sweater or your favorite T-shirt. Another plus of the transparent plastic container is the control of the cleanliness of things. Through the walls of the container, it is easier to see contamination of clothing or the container itself. But for all the convenience of transparent walls, the containers themselves should be located away from sunlight in order to prevent changes in the shades of fabrics. If there is no room in the cabinet for a container, you can use transparent bags or bags, including vacuum ones, instead. They usually place such voluminous things as blankets, bedding, down jackets, jackets, etc.
But it is best to purchase special plastic containers for storing things that allow air to pass through. Good ventilation will help prevent mold. However, it is better not to put such containers on the carpet - there are a lot of dust and parasites in it, which can easily pass onto clothes.
2. Nuances of storing summer clothes
Shorts, swimwear and sandals take up less space than winter clothes, and you can safely use the extra space in your closet and dressers to accommodate at least part of your summer wardrobe. Before storing summer clothes, it is important to consider that exposure to the sun, chlorine from swimming pools and seawater often damages fabrics. Therefore, items should be washed and dried beforehand to remove salt or corrosive chemicals from them. Swimwear, swimming goggles, caps and other swimming accessories should be kept in metal baskets or boxes, strictly dry.
Summer baseball caps and hats can be stored on regular coat hooks. And it is advisable to put beach shoes on waterproof trays so that moisture and sand do not spread throughout the house. The parasol and parasols can be placed in a tall basket in the hallway or on a wall bracket near the front door. So they will always be in sight, so as not to look for their right moment.
3. Delicate storage
Clothes made of beads, chiffon, viscose, silk or taffeta require special care. Here are some guidelines for storing them:
If possible, roll these items into a roll to avoid stretching the fabric and tightening that can occur when rubbing with other items on the hanger.
Another good way to do this is to gently roll these clothes into acid-free paper (you can buy them in art or craft stores).
Clothes made from natural fabrics (cotton, linen, silk and wool) must breathe. Therefore, it is advisable to store them in ventilated containers and in a well-ventilated area. If you need to remove such things for long-term storage, it is better to wrap them in a muslin cloth. It will protect them from dust and light.
4. Preservation of aroma
If stored improperly for a long time, things often acquire a musty, unpleasant odor. To avoid this, it is advisable to periodically ventilate the storage containers and keep them at the optimum temperature (do not put them in direct sunlight or in a cold basement). Putting clothes in a container, preferably freshly washed. If the room is exposed to humidity, it is useful to turn on the dehumidifier there from time to time or ventilate it.
Products with essential oils will help to preserve a pleasant smell. For example, you can put some of your favorite oils on a few pieces of cotton wool and spread them in different corners of a container or drawer with things. Moles and other parasites dislike the scents of lavender, cedar and rosemary. Small sachets can also be put in lockers with clothes or placed on hangers. Particular attention should be paid to wool items. The smells of cedar, tobacco, orange, pepper, as well as tar and strawberry soap will scare them away.
5. Regular check
When storing clothes for a long time, it will not hurt to check them at least every two months: has it deteriorated, is there a source of moisture in the closet, has a moth settled? and so on. Having taken things out of their storage area, you can hang them out on the balcony or spread them out on the sofa and ventilate the room. After that, you need to selectively inspect several types of clothing from a common heap, clean their containers from dust and update moth repellents.
If the plastic lid of the container smells persistently, then it may be a sign of moisture getting into it. This is often the case in containers with plastic lids, so it is better to use cloth lids. Unlike synthetic fabrics, it is better to put things made from natural materials in a container, the bottom and sides of which are wrapped in acid-free paper or natural fabric. For added protection against moisture, this paper can be rolled up and placed between clothes for better air circulation.
It is advisable to store shoes in fabric bags that protect them from dust. And so that the boots and boots do not lose their original shape, you need to put lumps of crumpled paper or newspaper inside them.
