For several centuries, the turnip has been affectionately called the “queen of the garden”. She was a regal person until the potatoes were brought from America. Most gardeners plant turnips in the spring or summer. However, it is quite possible to sow this wonderful crop in winter, allowing you to enjoy an early harvest. And even if something goes wrong during the winter sowing, turnips can always be sown also in the spring
Site preparation
It is necessary to start preparing a plot for sowing turnips in winter from the beginning of autumn. Around the same period, you should also take care of the nutrient substrate, which will be covered with turnip seeds after sowing. Loose garden soil, combined with sand or peat, is quite suitable for this purpose.
The best precursors for turnips are tomatoes with potatoes and cucumbers with onions. It is especially welcome if the soil under the predecessors was fertilized with various organic fertilizers. But after other cruciferous crops (cabbage, rutabagas, daikon and radish with radish), sowing turnips is definitely not worth it.
On the site intended for winter sowing of turnips, you should thoroughly dig up the soil, adding wood ash to it during the digging process and applying good mineral fertilizers.
The beds on which it is planned to sow turnips need to be raised by ten to fifteen centimeters above the soil level. And so that the soil does not subside after some time, the formed beds should be watered.
Before the very establishment of negative temperatures in the beds, grooves are made with a depth of about three centimeters. In this case, the distance between the grooves must be maintained in the range from thirty-five to forty centimeters.
Sowing turnip
Sowing turnips begins immediately, as soon as constant negative temperatures are established at night. As a rule, this happens approximately at the end of November and in December. If suddenly snow falls out, it should be carefully raked from the beds and sowing seeds should be started.
The seeds are poured into the prepared grooves, after which they are covered with a loose substrate harvested from the fall. When the furrows are completely covered, the soil should be compacted a little. And from above, the crops of turnip can be mulched with fallen leaves or sawdust.
The seeding rate of seeds for podzimnim sowing of turnips should be slightly increased in comparison with the amount of seeds that are taken for spring sowing. This is due to the fact that winter sowing is always a risk: sown seeds during thaws may begin to germinate prematurely, and when frosts return, all seedlings will simply die.
Spring formalities
When, with the onset of early spring, the snow begins to melt, the beds with turnips planted before winter are freed from mulch, after which they are covered with any non-woven material or film, which are fixed on special bows.
Turnip seedlings usually hatch fairly quickly. Subsequent care for them consists mainly in loosening the soil in the aisles and in thorough weeding. It is equally important to provide growing vitamin root crops and timely watering. Of course, it is not necessary to fill them in this, however, turnip reacts extremely negatively to prolonged drying out of the soil - it will begin to taste bitter and become flabby.
When growing turnips, it is important to take into account that the growing seedlings can attack cruciferous fleas. It is very easy to identify them - small holes will begin to appear on the turnip leaves, and it will not be difficult to notice the flea beetles themselves - these black shiny pests are usually immediately striking. If an invasion of harmful insects does occur, the vegetation begins to be treated with such folk remedies as infusion of calendula, marigolds or garlic, as well as wood ash and tobacco dust.
Well, the growing turnip does not require any additional dressing, especially if the soil was well fertilized in the fall. The only exceptions are very poor soils.

It is worth using this agricultural technique at least once, and after harvesting the first harvest, it will immediately turn into an everyday event
Winter Sowing With Coated Seeds
