Sowing garlic in the winter provides an early harvest, because garlic sown before the first frost ripens in the spring about half a month earlier than its relatives planted in the spring. And the shoots of such crops are usually very friendly and incredibly dense. The more snowy the winter is, the more abundant and better the spring harvest will be. It is worth using this agricultural technique at least once, and after harvesting the first harvest, it will immediately turn into an everyday event
Preparation of beds for winter sowing of garlic
It is necessary to prepare the beds for the upcoming winter sowing of garlic in a month and a half. As a rule, gardeners begin to be puzzled by this issue in the first or second decades of August. And garlic is usually planted before winter before other crops - from the third decade of September to the second decade of October.
Summer radish with turnip, early cabbage with zucchini, greens and legumes, and pumpkin with cucumber are excellent precursors for garlic. But in areas where garlic or onions previously grew, planting garlic before winter earlier than three or four years later is categorically not recommended.
Garlic will grow best on loamy and fairly fertile soils, characterized by a slightly acidic or neutral reaction and enriched with all kinds of organic substances.
It is advisable to equip the beds in perfectly heated sunny areas. Also, the plots should not be flooded with melt water, because garlic in the spring can get very wet on them.
A bucket of compost or humus should be added to each bed. Additionally, potassium sulfate and superphosphate are added at the rate of one tablespoon per square meter. And in order to prevent possible invasions of stem nematodes, the beds are lime. To do this, a couple of tablespoons of chalk are consumed for each square meter of the beds. All of the above substances must be sealed to a depth of eighteen to twenty centimeters, after which the beds should be leveled and thoroughly treated with copper sulfate (ten liters of water - a tablespoon). For each square meter, one liter of copper sulfate solution is consumed. This treatment will help protect the garlic plantings from fusarium infection.
And so that moisture does not accumulate in the beds, they must be systematically loosened. In addition, loosening will help in getting rid of weeds.
We plant garlic
For autumn planting, freshly harvested winter garlic should be selected. It is advisable to select all the cloves without flaws and of a rather large size (on average, 12 - 14 g each).
Planting material must be disinfected before planting. This is required in order to finally be sure that he is not infected with ticks. In the case of the presence of these dangerous parasites on the garlic heads, you can notice depressed sores of a pale yellowish tint. If infected cloves are planted before winter, noticeably curved plants will grow from them, the leaves of which will certainly be corrugated.
To disinfect garlic cloves, they are soaked in a solution of an insecticide suitable for this purpose. And right before sowing, they are washed in a solution of sodium chloride for one to two minutes. To prepare such a solution, dissolve three tablespoons of salt in five liters of water. After this washing, the garlic cloves are transferred to a solution of copper sulfate for one minute (a tablespoon of the product per ten liters of water). And then the cloves are immediately planted in the beds, without rinsing them with water.
You can also soak the garlic cloves in a solution of potassium permanganate for eight to twelve hours before planting, or you can disinfect them with Fitosporin-M.
Garlic is planted in such a period that before the onset of frost the plants have time to form only roots. Planting too early promotes the development of leaves, and this can be detrimental to plants when frosty weather sets in.
The most optimal height of the beds for winter sowing of garlic will be about fifteen to twenty centimeters - in this case, the beds will warm up well, and in general, the water-air soil regime will be very favorable. And in order for the beds to be heated as best as possible, it is recommended to orient them from north to south.
As for the planting scheme, a single-line planting would be an ideal option, observing the row spacing within the range of 20 - 25 cm. Small cloves are embedded in the soil at a distance of five to six centimeters from each other, and large ones at a distance of eight to ten centimeters. At the same time, all cloves should deepen four to five centimeters from the soil surface. Having completed the planting of garlic cloves, some gardeners mulch the soil with humus or peat, and for better snow retention they throw branches over the beds.
