In standard city apartments, indoor Christmas trees called araucaria can now be found infrequently, and it is possible that all this is because many simply do not know how to grow them. Of course, the cultivation of these pretty ones requires certain skills and efforts, since it is much more difficult for beauties for Christmas trees to survive in indoor conditions than for all kinds of deciduous plants. But, nevertheless, there is nothing unreal in their cultivation either
How to plant?
Freshly harvested araucaria seeds are sown one by one in pots filled with a mixture of sand and peat, after which they slightly moisten the soil and move the pots to a warm place. It is important to take into account that the first shoots can appear both after a couple of weeks, and after two months, and this is absolutely normal!
As for the cuttings, they are usually cut at the beginning of the summer season (it is advisable to try to choose only apical semi-lignified specimens). Slices are made about three to four centimeters below the whorls, and then all the collected material is dried and cleaned of resin. Further, the sections are dusted with root, after which the cuttings are planted in mini-greenhouses, trying to deepen them to the level of whorls. Just like pots with seeds, mini-greenhouses with cuttings are also transferred to a warm place - as a rule, they take four to five months to root.
Conditions of detention
Araucaria is one of the few evergreen conifers that you can safely grow at home and dress up for the New Year holidays. However, it is important to take into account that such Christmas trees are very capricious creatures. Nevertheless, if you try in every possible way to please these fickle things, everything will definitely work out!
Indoor Christmas trees must be placed in corners with sufficiently bright, but at the same time, diffused light, but in no case should direct sunlight fall into these corners. It is especially good if there are windows on both sides of the houseplant.
In the summer season, indoor Christmas trees are kept at temperatures from twenty to twenty-two degrees, and in winter the thermometer should be in the range from ten to fourteen degrees. At the same time, it is important to protect the araucaria in every possible way from sudden temperature changes - for it, it is extremely undesirable to jump from coolness to warmth, and vice versa.
Fertilizers and watering
The beautiful araucaria is watered quite often and very abundantly, trying to take carefully settled rainwater or not too hard boiled water for irrigation. However, despite the fact that such trees do not tolerate the drying out of an earthen coma, the water in the sump should not stagnate. Ideally, it is advisable to mulch the soil in a pot with sphagnum moss, which will subsequently need to be systematically moistened. And if the apartment is always dry and warm, you will have to additionally spray the crowns of Christmas trees, doing this two or three times a day.
As for fertilizers, the organic matter of araucaria is categorically contraindicated - for feeding this beauty, only half doses of complex mineral fertilizers are used, characterized by minimal dosages of calcium (that is, lime). It is best to take fertilizers specially designed for rhododendrons with azaleas, endowed with the ability to slightly acidify the soil. Indoor Christmas trees are usually fed from April to August, doing this every two to three weeks.
How and when to transplant?
Young plants should be transplanted every two to three years, and larger specimens should be transplanted once every three to five years - it is better not to disturb or injure their roots if there is no special need for indoor Christmas trees. As a rule, transplanting is done in the spring. You can use a soil specially designed for rhododendrons for these purposes, or you can simply add a small amount of coniferous soil and sour peat to the soil mixture for indoor plants.
With the right approach, it is not so difficult to grow a indoor Christmas tree, but if there is a desire and the area allows, you can grow several copies at once and make good money on this on New Year's Eve!
