For those who love the aroma of jasmine, but by the will of fate do not live in warm regions where evergreen shrubs grow, nature has created another shrub with a similar aroma. It is much more hardy than jasmine, and therefore pleases fans living in central Russia. The deciduous shrub is called Chubushnik

Rod Chubushnik

For the aroma of white flowers blooming in May-June, Chubushnik is also called "Garden Jasmine". The adjective “garden” distinguishes the deciduous Chubushnik from the evergreen thermophilic jasmine.

The Latin name for chubushnik is Philadelphus. He has Greek roots from two words, which can be translated as "brotherly love." The reason for this name was the shoots of the plant, which are closely close to each other, creating a dense green bush of oval-solid leaves with a jagged edge..

The plant owes its Russian name, "Chubushnik", to its hollow stems, from which in the old days, tobacco lovers made smoking pipes - chubuki.

Varieties

Fragrant chubushnik (Philadelphus coronarius) is a bushy bush with fragrant white flowers that form clusters of 5-7 flowers. There is a variety "Golden", which is distinguished by the golden-yellow color of young spring leaves, which acquire a yellow-green color in summer.

Growing

Any garden soil with good drainage is suitable for a chubushnik. Watering is necessary only for young plants.

The landing site can be sunny or semi-shaded. Chubushnik is frost-resistant, can withstand temperatures up to minus 20 degrees. With snowdrifts completely covering the bush, it manages to withstand even at lower temperatures.

Chubushnik is good both in a single planting and in a group. The shrub is especially decorative during spring flowering. After the end of flowering, old lignified branches are cut out.

The plant easily adapts to natural conditions, is resistant to pests and diseases, is not afraid of polluted air, and therefore is in demand for planting in city parks and gardens. Still, it can be affected by aphids, golden bronze beetles.

In places with a mild climate, planting is carried out in March, in the middle lane - in October.

Reproduction

Chubushnik can be propagated by seeds, cuttings and air layers. More often they resort to propagation by cuttings. To do this, take cuttings from young branches in July-August. The cuttings are kept in a lighted cool and humid place, planting them in peat with sand. When the roots appear, they are seated one by one, planted in a permanent place the next year, in October.

The best time to buy chubushnik seedlings in horticultural centers is spring or autumn, when you can immediately plant a seedling in open ground, in a permanent place.
