The hot season of sowing seeds and growing seedlings is approaching, and it is important to remember the basic rules for choosing seed and working with it. Many people like bell peppers. What you need to know to make this sweet-tasting vegetable a success?

Pay attention to the packaging

The correct choice of seed is already half the success. What important information can you glean from the packaging? First of all, you need to pay attention to the timing of the ripening of vegetables. For the middle lane, with a relatively late and short summer, experts recommend choosing early varieties. Vegetable pepper belongs to the nightshade family, and has much in common with tomato in agricultural technology, but an important difference is its acute sensitivity to lower temperatures. And therefore, you should dwell on those varieties that will have time to yield before the cold weather.

The next factor will be important for those who are interested in seed production. When they expect to collect seeds from the best fruits for further propagation, varietal varieties should be preferred over hybrids. Hybrids are more resistant to diseases and unfavorable conditions, they are distinguished by excellent size and brightness. But they do not give the same gorgeous offspring. You can recognize seed hybrids by special markings on the packaging - they are designated as F1.

In preparation for sowing, seeds are usually soaked for germination. However, this rule has an exception. And it concerns those seeds that have already been pretreated with fungicides, growth stimulants. This information should also be reflected on the packaging.

Preparing and sowing seeds for seedlings

When the seeds still require soaking, it is useful to do this in a humid environment with air access - on a cloth, gauze. If you just immerse them in a jar of water, it will badly affect the seed.

Sowing should be carried out in a fairly loose soil mixture. A substrate of peat and humus, coconut mixture, peat tablets are suitable for this. In order to save space, gardeners practice sowing seeds that have been picked up in a common container with the expectation of a future pick. But unlike tomatoes, on which such a procedure will have a beneficial effect, stimulating the development of the root system and strengthening the plant, pepper does not tolerate this operation well and does not like when its roots are disturbed at the stage of growing seedlings, and later on when transplanted to a permanent place. Pepper, transplanted with a clod of earth, takes root better, gets sick less, tolerates dry periods more steadily. Therefore, it would be a wise decision to spend money on peat tablets, compose your peat-humus cubes with sides of about 5 cm or do more wasteful sowing in relation to free space in separate seedling pots.

Crop maintenance and transplanting into a larger pot

After sowing, the containers are left in a dark place for several days. When the seedlings break through, they urgently move the sowing containers to the light so that the seedlings do not have time to stretch out. In addition, in the morning and evening hours, as well as during the day in cloudy weather, it is necessary to provide the plants with additional illumination from artificial sources. Fluorescent lamps are suitable for this.

The transfer of plants is carried out when the roots are wrapped around the earthen lump provided for them. This happens around the 4-leaf phase. A layer of fresh soil is poured into a pot of larger capacity. In the center, seedlings with an earthen lump are set and compacted with fresh soil on the sides. Then you need to water the seedlings with warm water and add more dry earth. After such a procedure, the seedlings are shaded from the direct rays of the sun for one or two days. But later they provide good lighting again.
