It is no secret that onions, just like a number of other vegetables, can be planted before winter. Nevertheless, it is not yet possible to speak about the wide distribution of podwinter sowing of onions. And in vain - the volume of onion harvest when sowing it in winter is no less than when sowing in spring, but the harvest ripens two to three weeks earlier. And such a crop is stored very well. At the same time, the sevok overwinters well and does not need shelter at all - a short snow retention will be quite enough
What types of onions to prefer
Onion varieties such as Kip-Vell, Senshiyu yellow and Radar are excellent for winter sowing. These mid-season varieties are distinguished by good yields and a fairly high resistance to invasions of all kinds of garden parasites.
Basic sowing rules
The land for winter sowing of onions should be prepared in advance - for this purpose, the soil is first dug deeply, and then various fertilizers are applied. The ideal fertilization option would be humus, but in its absence it is quite possible to use good mineral fertilizers: 10-15 g of potassium salt, 20-25 g of superphosphate or 30 g of ecofoska are applied for each square meter of the plot. It will also be useful to add ash just before planting.
When building beds, it is important to try to make them tall - if the beds are low, the onions can quickly freeze. All beds need to be thoroughly loosened. And the sowing grooves should be made deep enough - about three to four centimeters of soil should remain above the sowing placed in them.
Planting onions before winter should be thirty to thirty-five days before the onset of stable frosts. The diameter of the onion intended for sowing should not exceed one centimeter. It is advisable to maintain the distance between the bulbs within seven to ten centimeters, and between the rows - in the range from twenty to twenty five centimeters. If you place the onion more densely, it will experience a lack of space for adequate nutrition.
After the onion is in the grooves, they should be covered with humus and leveled with a rake (more precisely, their back side), slightly compacting the soil.
Some summer residents also advise to mulch the beds with sawdust or peat, but one can argue about the feasibility of this event. The fact is that peat is characterized by low thermal conductivity and rather high heat capacity. With the onset of spring, it thaws very slowly, thereby delaying the onion growing season. Therefore, it is still advisable to refrain from peat cover.
However, it is not necessary to completely abandon mulching. As a mulch when sowing onions in winter, spruce branches, straw or tops are suitable. And from above, the mulch is usually pressed with perches or twigs. As a rule, the beds begin to mulch as soon as the soil freezes a little. And when, with the onset of spring, it begins to thaw, the mulch must be removed.
What to do in spring
In most cases, the formation of bulbs in spring begins after the formation of four leaves. During this period, growing crops should be fed - phosphorus-potassium supplements will be the most optimal. For each square meter of the plot, it is necessary to add superphosphate in the amount of 15 - 20 g and potash fertilizers (10 - 15 g). And if you hurry up and apply fertilizers in liquid form, the plants will absorb them much better. An excellent effect is given by watering the growing onion with a solution of fermented herbs with the addition of superphosphate, as well as adding a glass of ash for each square meter of crops. And after such watering, the beds need to be thoroughly loosened. It is also possible to alternate the application of fertilizing with irrigation with the "Humata-80" solution.
Onion pest control will be an equally important spring event. To scare off the most common pest - the onion fly, experts advise planting the beds with marigolds or calendula.
