Unfortunately, not everyone is the happy owner of cellars and basements. Many of us are forced to store beets in an apartment. Of course, you can just buy a small amount of beets as needed and store them in the refrigerator, but it's still better to stock up on them in the fall. With due diligence, it is quite possible to keep useful roots in the apartment. Moreover, the taste of beets, which are sold in winter and early spring, are far from the best

Options for storing beets in the apartment

To preserve beets in a city apartment, they are laid out in plastic bags and placed in a cool place - next to the front door or balcony. In this case, the packages are not tied in any way.

If there is a glazed balcony, it is not forbidden to use it to store beet stocks. As a rule, on balconies, beets are stacked in wooden boxes in layers. So that the roots do not touch each other, they are sprinkled with dry sawdust, sand or shavings.

In order for the beets stored on the balconies not to suffer from frost, it is recommended to cover the boxes on top with old blankets.

If sacks of potatoes are already stored on the balcony, then the beets can simply be placed on top - both the potatoes and the beets themselves will benefit.

Due to the fact that beets are the owner of a strong and thick skin, moisture evaporates from it rather slowly. This feature allows you to store root crops for at least a week at room temperature. The main thing is to place them away from heating appliances. For example, you can place them under a closet or under a bed. And if, before sending for storage, you dip the root crops in an earthen solution, then they can be stored in room conditions for up to four months.

You can store beets in the refrigerator, but only for no more than a month. To do this, the roots are placed in plastic bags with pre-drilled holes in them or wrapped in cling film. It is important to ensure that condensation does not appear in the bags, which has a detrimental effect on the preservation of the beets. Also, beets sent for storage in the refrigerator can be packed in food foil or in high-quality parchment paper. In this case, chances are great to extend the shelf life of beets in the refrigerator up to three months.

Little tricks

To keep your beet stock in the best possible way, it will be useful to familiarize yourself with the recommendations below.

Beets are excellently stored in the sand. Only the sand should be disinfected in advance by roasting it in the oven or thoroughly calcining it in the sun. And some gardeners also wash the sand before calcining. Putting the beets in boxes, sprinkle them with prepared sand so that the roots do not come into contact with each other. After all of them are stacked in a box, a layer of sand of at least two centimeters is poured on top.

Table salt is also a fairly good material for pouring root crops. By the way, the popularity of this storage method has been gaining momentum over the years. Often, beets are powdered and well sifted wood ash, or they are shifted with fern leaves. Root crops will be stored in shavings just as well, as well as in sawdust or peat. At the same time, it is better to store small roots separately from large ones.

In order to protect the beets from various ailments, before starting to put them in boxes, dry rolling in chalk powder is carried out.

Polyethylene bags with a capacity of up to thirty-five to forty kilograms are also well suited for storing beet stocks. Only in order to provide them with free air access, such bags do not need to be tied. And if there are a lot of beets, it would be nice to make special polyethylene liners, with which the roots are separated from each other.
