Heuchera hairy (lat. Heuchera villosa) - decorative perennial culture; a representative of the Heuchera genus of the Saxifrage family. A rare species, rarely used in ornamental gardening. Naturally occurs in the river valleys of the Mississippi (United States of America).
Characteristics of culture
Heuchera hairy is represented by herbaceous plants up to 30-45 cm in height with a large rosette of green or greenish-bronze velvety maple-shaped leaves, sitting on pubescent petioles, and a short rhizome. The flowers are inconspicuous, numerous, small, greenish-cream in color, collected in loose paniculate inflorescences, towering on pubescent peduncles. The natural variety of Heuchera hairy was named Bronze Wave, it is a plant with luxurious, large, corrugated, slightly pubescent, rounded in outline bronze, peach and orange leaves and creamy white flowers blooming in June-August.
Heuchera hairy is recognized as one of the largest species. She prefers moist, nutritious soils and a semi-shaded location. There are several cultivars of the species in question, which develop without any problems in the shade. The varieties currently presented on the garden market differ in the color of the foliage, it can be light green, apricot-bronze and purple. One of the well-known and widely cultivated varieties, called Palace Purple, was obtained thanks to the hairy geychera. Back in the 1990s, the variety was recognized as the perennial of the year.
Growing features
Heuchera hairy is an adherent of loose, loamy, permeable soils with a pH of 6, 1-7, 8. The main condition for successful cultivation is considered not only loosening, but also systematic hilling. The fact is that the plants grow very strongly over time, as a result, the base rises high above the soil level. And in order for the plant to look attractive and feel good, it is important to spud heuchera annually. As in the case of other representatives of the genus, heuchera hairy will not tolerate excess and stagnation of water, excess moisture threatens root rot and plant death or damage by powdery mildew or leaf spot.
Heuchera hairy propagates by seeds, dividing the bush and cuttings. The second method is used more actively, the more overgrown plants need to be divided and transplanted every 3-5 years, otherwise the geykhera will acquire a very dubious and not entirely decorative look. The division of the bush is carried out in the third decade of April - the first decade of May, you can also carry out this procedure at the end of August. During flowering, it is highly undesirable to divide the bushes.
Each division should have roots and about 5 buds. This is a prerequisite for the successful survival of the divisions. Cutting also does not cause difficulties, but it is not often used by gardeners. Heuchera is cut in June - July, but before flowering. When planting young plants, a distance of 25-30 cm is observed. For the first two years, heuchera is covered with dry fallen leaves, such an operation will protect the plants from the cold and prevent freezing, and therefore, possible death.
It is not recommended to plant Heuchera on clay, heavy, waterlogged, compacted and highly acidic soils. On such soils, the culture feels defective, develops slowly, and in winter it freezes out even in the presence of shelter. In terms of leaving, Heuchera is unpretentious. She needs only rare watering, feeding once every 1-2 years with compost or humus (in small quantities, since Heuchera does not like excess fertilizers), it has already been mentioned about loosening and hilling.
Application
Heuchera hairy is one of the ornamental plants that is suitable for decorating the coastal zone of artificial and natural reservoirs. They fit perfectly into curb and group plantings. Also, it is not forbidden to plant plants near trees and bushes, as well as in rock gardens, rockeries, mixborders, ridges, flower beds and other types of flower beds. Heuchera goes well with sedums, irises, hosts, low-growing irises, ornamental cereals, primroses, forest trees, crocuses, etc.
