Most often, beets are stored in cellars or basements. To keep the prepared root vegetables strong and tasty, it is extremely important to provide them with proper storage conditions - just sending the beets to the cellar or to the basement will not be enough, you also need to take care of the basic rules. If done properly, nutritious root vegetables will remain tasty and juicy until the new season begins. We have already discussed the basic rules for harvesting beetroot crops and preparing useful root crops for storage in the first part of the article, and now it's time to talk about organizing the most suitable storage conditions and its possible options
Suitable storage conditions
Of course, it is best to store the beet crop in a cellar or basement, while trying to keep the humidity below 90%. As for the temperature, it should be in the range from zero to two degrees. If the thermometer begins to rise higher, then the roots will quickly fade, gradually rot and hurt. By the way, at the very beginning of storage, beets are characterized by a special sensitivity to rising temperatures - as soon as the temperature reaches four degrees, the tops of the stored root crops will instantly sprout.
The higher the humidity and temperature in the place where the beets are stored, the faster the development of a wide variety of fungal diseases will occur, and as a result, they can cover the entire crop as a whole in the shortest possible time. By the way, during the sorting of the harvested crop, the characteristic signs of a number of diseases are outwardly completely invisible.
Good air circulation is no less important in storage facilities - ventilation in the basement should ideally be natural, and all harvest bins are usually installed above the floor level by fifteen centimeters - this solution will allow the air to fully circulate, preventing sweating of the beet crop, as well as evenly cooling his.
Storage options
If you store beets in a cellar, then this storage option will be practically no different from storing carrots or potatoes. It is quite possible to even store the harvested root vegetables in bulk on the floor. However, it is much more convenient to build bins, the height of the walls of which will reach one meter, and on the bottom of such bins for excellent ventilation of the crop, it is advisable to place a lattice made of wood. And the distance from the walls of the basements with the cellars to the constructed bins should be at least ten centimeters. In this case, the gaps in the walls of the bins should not exceed five centimeters, otherwise the beets can easily fall into them.
In most cases, beets are stored on top of potatoes (both in bags and in boxes). This option is good because it allows you to kill two birds with one stone: the potatoes will be saved from excessive moisture, and the beets will absorb the moisture that it desperately needs.
Beets, stored in the form of pyramids, placed on racks or shelves, look quite colorful. And at the same time it is preserved very well.
Sometimes beets are stored in the same way as carrots, in boxes filled with river sand well dried in the sun. However, when choosing this storage option, periodically throughout the winter you will have to make sure that the sand does not get wet.
Some gardeners, in order to preserve the roots better, dust them with carefully sifted ash. And some of them sprinkle the beets with sand.
Both under the beets and on top of it, sometimes leaves of fern or other green friends enriched with phytoncides are laid.
Beets can also be stored well in crates by sprinkling them with salt or dipping them in a strong saline solution. If the roots were treated with a solution, then they must first be thoroughly dried.
And, of course, it is extremely important to ensure that rodents do not appear in basements with cellars, otherwise you will have to share the long-awaited harvest with them.
