Continuing the topic of cilantro storage, one cannot fail to mention its storage in the increasingly popular paper towels - both wet and dry. If in the first case the greens will last for about five to seven days, then the second option will allow you to keep it for two to three weeks. However, each of these methods is good in its own way, so both options deserve attention. And which of them to use - everyone decides for himself
Storage in damp paper towels
Use kitchen scissors to trim dry ends on each cilantro stalk. It is best to cut them under running water (ideally, it should be cool) - in this case, the plants are practically not injured, and the ends of the stems are kept fresher. You should also free the twigs from all wilting and clearly damaged leaves.
Then the cilantro is placed in a container, and poured on top with cool water - the stems should be completely covered with it. In five to ten minutes, the branches should be saturated with water. By the way, such a soaking helps to remove all debris and accumulated dirt from the leaves.
The twigs taken out of the water are transferred to a salad dryer - in this device, the wet grass is dried until it becomes dry to the touch. If there is no such device in the house, you can dry the cilantro and between several layers of dry paper towels, or dry it with a kitchen towel. As a result of such a procedure, the leaves should become completely dry.
The dried grass is laid out on slightly moistened paper towels (in no case on wet ones), after which cilantro is carefully wrapped with them - the greens should be wrapped on all sides. And then it is placed in sealed plastic containers or in strong plastic bags. The containers are closed and the name of the herb and the date are marked on them. If herbs are placed in sealed containers, it is important to ensure that the lids are securely closed and leave no chance of air infiltration either outside or inside. And if cilantro is stored in bags, their upper part is not completely closed - you need to leave 2.5 cm (this is 1 inch) of open space. Also, before you finish packing the cilantro, all the air must be squeezed out of the bags. The packaged herb is sent to be stored in the refrigerator.
This method is only suitable for short-term storage of cilantro - from five days to a week. So, if you need to keep it longer, it is better to prefer other storage options.
Storage in dry paper towels
All dry ends are cut from the cilantro stalks and all damaged and old leaves are removed. Tough stems can be cut whole. In principle, with this method of storage, the stems will not be needed - they will no longer pull moisture, so getting rid of them can significantly facilitate the storage of spicy herbs in an airtight container.
Next, the cilantro should be thoroughly dried - either with the aforementioned salad dryer or with paper towels. If you leave the leaves of fragrant grass wet, it will quickly deteriorate. You can place the cilantro on a dry kitchen towel and place it in direct sunlight for several hours.
The dried grass is folded in layers, alternating between layers of grass with dry paper towels. This is done as follows: on the bottom of a sealed plastic container (plastic bags for storing cilantro in this way will not work) a sheet of dry paper towel is placed, on top of it is a layer of grass, followed by another layer of towel, and so on. The topmost layer should, of course, be a paper towel. However, it is also not worth stacking too many layers - cilantro in this case will be stored worse. Filled containers are sealed, making sure they are tightly closed. And then the containers are placed in the refrigerator.
This method allows you to preserve cilantro for two to three weeks. However, during this time, it should be periodically checked, promptly discarding all discolored or wilted branches. And if moisture is found in the container, both the container and the grass must be dried again.
