Heuchera small-flowered (Latin Heuchera micrantha) - flowering decorative culture; a representative of the Heuchera genus of the Saxifrage family. In nature, plants can be found along the entire coast of the Atlantic Ocean in North America. One of the most graceful and beautiful species used in ornamental gardening.
Characteristics of culture
Heuchera small-flowered is a low plant with a lush rosette of leaves, outwardly very similar to the leaves of the Norway maple, but differing in an unusual color with gray-silver spots. Leaves in outline are rounded, jagged, purple specimens are found, however, most often in nature. It is thanks to this characteristic that the breeders managed to bring out very effective varieties with colorful foliage.
The flowers of the species under consideration are small, numerous, creamy pink, collected in loose paniculate inflorescences from 30 to 60 cm high. A distinctive feature of the flowers is the presence of red-orange anthers. Heuchera small-flowered blooms in May for 2 months. Quite whimsical view, prefers well-moistened (which is not surprising, because plants are found in nature on the coast), nutritious, loose, air and permeable soils.
By crossing small-flowered Heuchera with other popular species, for example, blood-red Heuchera and American Heuchera, varieties were obtained that deserve the attention of Russian and European flower growers and gardeners. It should be noted that small-flowered geychera has not very high winter-hardy properties, but it is successfully cultivated both in the southern regions and in central Russia.
So, among gardeners, two varieties are most popular, these are Bresslngham Bronze and Palace Purple. The second variety has many positive reviews, it is represented by plants up to 50 cm high with purple leaves with a metallic sheen and white flowers, collected in loose graceful panicles. Relatively frost-resistant and drought-resistant variety, will decorate any flower gardens from spring to warm autumn.
The subtleties of growing
Despite the fact that most types of geychera are unpretentious, the species in question makes special demands on the location and soils. These include good drainage, moisture-absorbing and loose soil (this has already been mentioned), sufficient illumination, but with shading at midday hours. In general, Heuchers love intense sunlight only in the morning hours. They have a negative attitude towards a thick shadow, they prefer diffused light more. To provide such lighting, you can plant a crop near bushes of berry and ornamental crops or along the periphery of the crown of pears, apple trees or plums.
Fertilized and cultivated soils are preferred. On poor soils, cultivation is possible, but with preliminary and regular introduction of compost or humus. Fertilizers are applied at the rate of 10 kg per 1 sq. m. Raw plots for the cultivation of small-flowered heuchera are not suitable, excess moisture can destroy the roots first, and then the plant itself. Drainage is also desirable, this approach will provide the plants with excellent air and water permeability. Coarse river sand or fine gravel can act as drainage.
Care
The main condition for the successful cultivation of small-flowered heuchera is systematic loosening and hilling. The thing is that over time, the rosette of leaves grows strongly and becomes bare at the base. That is why experienced gardeners advise replanting plants at least once every 3-5 years, otherwise the outlet splits in different directions and looks very unattractive. Divide the bushes into 2-3 parts (depending on its size).
This procedure is carried out in early spring with the appearance of new leaves, the flowering time is excluded. As already mentioned, small-flowered Heuchera loves nutritious soils, but has a negative attitude to an excess of fertilizers. Therefore, the plants should be fed once a year with compost or humus or complete mineral fertilizer in a lower concentration than for other flower crops. You should also be very careful with watering, overflow threatens the death of plants. If there was sufficient rainfall during the season, watering may not be required. For the winter, young plants, as well as non-resistant varieties, should be covered with dry fallen leaves.
