Heuchera blood-red (lat. Heuchera sanguinea) - decorative perennial culture; a representative of the Heuchera genus of the Saxifrage family. One of the most common types. Used to obtain new varieties. In nature, this representative can be found in rocky and humid areas in the southwestern regions of North America. The species is ideal for growing in the Russian Federation, since it has high winter-hardy properties and unpretentiousness. Americans call the species in question a red bell.
Characteristics of culture
Heuchera blood-red is a herb that forms a rosette of leaves in the process of growth. It has a powerful fleshy rhizome and does not have pronounced stems. Leaves in a reniform-rounded shape, glandular on both sides, pubescent, serrated, cordate at the base, shallowly dissected into 5-7 lobes, depending on the size of the leaf blade, in the process of growth they form a compact rosette, which reaches a height of 20-25 cm.
The flowers are attractive, graceful, small, red, crimson or dark pink in color, equipped with a five-part calyx, short lanceolate petals, collected in loose or dense paniculate inflorescences, sit on long strong peduncles. Fruits are ovoid capsules, reach a length of 5-6 mm, contain small dark brown seeds. Heuchera blooms blood-red in June - August for 2-3 months.
The species is winter-hardy, suitable for cultivation in central Russia. It develops well in open sunny areas with well-drained, rich, loose, fresh, unconsolidated soils. The species is relatively drought-resistant, but the plants are vulnerable to direct sunlight.
Heuchera blood-red is actively used by breeders, thanks to it, many decorative varieties have been obtained that differ in color of flowers, as well as in the length and shape of inflorescences. By the way, by crossing blood-red Heuchera with small-flowered Heuchera and American Heuchera, an equally interesting and attractive hybrid was obtained - Heuchera x brizoides.
