How to store garlic correctly. Part 1

Every season, garlic lovers face the question of its preservation for a long time. There is hardly a person who is not familiar with the beneficial properties of this unique product. In order for the garlic to be well stored, in addition to providing it with proper storage conditions, it is necessary to competently prepare it for this event. Some summer residents believe that the harvested garlic does not require special storage conditions, but in fact, such assumptions are far from the truth. Garlic, like other crops, imposes certain requirements on storage conditions

Cleaning time

In order for the garlic to be stored as best as possible, it is imperative to harvest it in a timely manner. Every gardener knows that garlic can be winter (that is, winter) and spring (in other words, summer). Spring garlic is usually not arrowed, and winter garlic can be either arrowed or non-arrowed.

The timing of harvesting spring garlic is determined by yellowed and lodging foliage. Most often, it is removed from the second decade of August until the end of the month. This is due to the fact that harvesting dates may shift slightly due to sudden climatic changes.

As for the ripening period of winter garlic, it is usually determined by the yellowing of the lower leaves, as well as by the cracking skin of the garlic inflorescences. The scales on the garlic heads become thinner and dry. That is, if the covering scales have become thin and strong enough, you can start harvesting. As a rule, winter garlic begins to be harvested in the twentieth of July and continues to be harvested until the end of the month.

Ideally, garlic is harvested when dry and warm weather is established, in the evening or early in the morning, when the sun's rays are not yet hot enough. It is not worth delaying the collection of the garlic harvest, otherwise its quality may noticeably suffer, as a result of which the good preservation of the harvested garlic cannot be guaranteed. In overripe garlic, the heads often disintegrate into separate cloves, the covering scales crack, and the bottoms of the heads give new roots and once again start to grow.

How to clean

During the harvesting of garlic, the bulbs are dug in with a pitchfork or a shovel. The pitchfork will still be the most preferable, since in this case the garlic heads get less cuts and other damage. If, during harvesting, part of the heads of garlic gets damaged, it is important to try to use them first. It is definitely not worth laying such copies for storage.

The garlic extracted from the soil is laid out to dry, after freeing the garlic heads and roots from the soil adhering to them. In dry weather, it will be ideal to dry the garlic right in the garden beds. As a rule, five days are enough for this. And if the weather is not happy and is characterized by high humidity, the garlic is sent to dry in well-ventilated rooms or under sheds. In principle, in the daytime, you can dry the garlic harvest in the sun, and in the late afternoon, transfer it to warm rooms.

By the way, it is necessary to dry the garlic together with the foliage. This is its fundamental difference from other crops, in which the foliage is cut off before drying in order to prevent the outflow of all kinds of nutrients.

When the garlic dries well, the roots are cut off from the bulbs, leaving tiny tails about 3 mm long. As for the stems, they are usually left with necks up to ten centimeters long.

At the end of all the above measures, the garlic heads must be sorted by size for their subsequent sending for storage. In this case, damaged and infected copies are necessarily deleted.

If you harvest and prepare garlic for winter storage in this order, then it will be perfectly preserved until the start of the new harvest.
