Collard greens bear little resemblance to their cabbage sisters, and their appearance is more reminiscent of a salad. Some representatives of this vegetable have such a decorative appearance that they will become a worthy decoration of a flower bed. Green, pink and purple, flat, curly and double leaves bloom widely in the garden, like the buds of beautiful giant flowers. At the same time, it is very tasty and has great nutritional value. If you are interested in this, then hurry up, because you need to have time to plant the seedlings of this non-traditional vegetable for our vegetable gardens by mid-August
Choosing a site for cabbage
Collard greens are very unassuming to care for. Both open sunny areas and lace penumbra are suitable for her. But when choosing a site for placing seedlings, one must take into account the fact that the color of decorative species with pink, red and other variegated leaves will be brighter if planted in a well-lit area. At the same time, ornamental Mosbakh cabbage, like its palm-like relative, will develop equally well in the sun and in partial shade.
Collard greens are also undemanding to soils, as well as to watering, in contrast to moisture-loving head varieties. As for its predecessors, it is better to plant it after potatoes, onions, lettuce, and legumes.
Planting seedlings in the beds
Before moving young plants from the nursery to the beds in the open ground, they must be prepared. First of all, the seedlings need to be watered a few hours before this manipulation. So it will gain strength and the roots will suffer less when removed from the ground. In addition, it will be useful to prepare a chatterbox from a solution of clay with a mullein. The roots are treated with this composition. It is also helpful to dust them with tobacco dust.
For collard greens, the bed is arranged in three rows. The aisles are left at least 40 cm wide so that the leaves are spacious. Low varieties of collard greens are distributed in the garden at a distance of about 30-35 cm from each other. Those specimens that rise high in growth are left with more space - 40-45 cm.
The seedling hole is prepared about 10 cm deep. It is useful to add a little superphosphate and wood ash to the ground, which will be added to the plant. Seedlings are immersed in the hole to the first true leaf. The earth around the roots is compacted and a small depression is formed into which watering is immediately carried out. Then pour a little more dry earth on top. This trick will prevent the formation of a dense crust.
Kale care
Caring for the planting of collard greens is devoid of any special techniques. It needs to be watered, weeded and loosened. Many types of kale, especially their ornamental representatives, have a weak root system. To protect them, after weeding and loosening, it is recommended to huddle the beds.
Fertilizers consist in feeding with ammonium nitrate. It is reasonable to combine top dressing with watering, after which it is recommended to mulch the beds. This technique will both prevent the spread of weeds and protect the soil from rapid evaporation of moisture, and will also be an additional protection for the root system. Experiment and see if mulching improves the quality of your crop significantly.
In the process of growing collard greens, it must be protected from pests. For her, the same insects are dangerous as for other types of cabbage: white beetle, aphid, scoop. They will be scared away by infusions of potato tops, tobacco, onion skins. Also, parasites will not be happy if they are "washed" with soapy water.
