Description
Lemon aspen is a spectacular tree of medium to small size (most often up to two and a half meters high), on which sour fruits are formed, capable of boasting a mixture of enchanting aromas of lime and grapefruit.
The leaves of this culture are elliptical and rather large: they grow in length from seven to twenty-four centimeters, and in width - from five to twelve centimeters. From above, they are always dark green, and from the lower sides - a little lighter and with a characteristic shine.
The fragrant little flowers of lemon aspen have a luxurious spicy aroma, and its flowering can be observed from November to April.
Ribbed fruits, which have a rather tart, but at the same time, a very pleasant citrus scent, are colored in pale lemon or cream tones and reach from one to three centimeters in diameter. They are very sour as they taste like lime and grapefruit. And inside each fruit, you can find an identical apple star nucleolus, which contains a huge number of tiny seeds.
Where grows
Lemon Aspen originates from the tropical rainforest of the beautiful Australian state of Queensland. It grows well in frost-free regions all the way to Sydney. And for commercial purposes, this plant is cultivated in insignificant volumes also on the east coast of distant Australia.
Application
The fruits of this culture are eaten fresh (usually with added sugar) or added to various sauces (savory are no exception), confectionery and juices. Often, the pulp of the fruit is stewed with added sugar or used as an additive to seasonings for seafood. It is noteworthy that only one hundred grams of these unusual fruits can replace the pulp or juice of six rather large lemons. Any dishes prepared with the addition of these fruits acquire a surprisingly pleasant aroma.
At the moment, there is no exact information about the chemical composition of these interesting fruits. It was possible to establish only that they contain a lot of citric acid. Plus, these fancy fruits boast quite strong antioxidant properties, making them a great tonic. They also protect the genetic apparatus of cells from harmful destruction by free radicals and help to strengthen the walls of blood vessels.
Contraindications
Currently, no serious contraindications for the use of lemon aspen fruits have been identified, however, the risk of allergic reactions and individual intolerance cannot be completely ruled out.
Growing and caring
Lemon aspen grows best in fertile loam or fairly dry soils. At the same time, it is desirable that the soils are well-drained. This tree grows very quickly, therefore, in order to keep it compact, it has to be systematically pruned.
The yield of this culture is average, but it bears fruit only once every four years, therefore, lemon aspen does not have too important commercial value.
