The artisan nature has worked wonderfully well, decorating the earthly tropics and subtropics with diverse Palms. One hundred and eighty-five genera includes a family of plants that has three names: Palms, Palm or Arecaceae. It would seem that such a number of genera demonstrates a sufficient diversity of related plants. But, nature does not think so, and therefore each genus is also divided into species, the number of which is close to three and a half thousand. Among such a huge variety, a person especially liked the palms of two genera: Date palm and Coconut palm. If the genus "Date Palm" can boast of the diversity of its plants, numbering in its ranks from fourteen to seventeen species, then the genus "Coconut" is represented in nature by only one species - the Coconut Palm. But, as the popular wisdom says, "the spool is small, but expensive."
In the countries of Southeast Asia, the Coconut Palm is loved and respected, calling it the "Tree of Life".
You will meet a slender single-barreled beauty on the seashore, spreading wide its dark green crown of large pinnately dissected leaves, and you will be speechless from the breathtaking beauty and power of the tree. And when you see under the crown a friendly cluster of weighty palm fruits, which can be seen in the main photo of this article, you will carefully move away from the beauty, fearing for the integrity of your own head.
But the Coconut Palm is famous not only for its external beauty. For thousands of years of coexistence, people have learned to use all parts of the palm tree in their life interests, from the roots to the fruits. On a hot afternoon, the coconut palm will quench a person's thirst by sharing with him the clear liquid hidden inside the coconut "nut". The chemical composition of this liquid is very close to the composition of human blood, and therefore in wartime it was used in hospitals as a saline solution. The so-called "copra" - a white fleshy layer that covers the inner side of a coconut "nut", will present a whole range of nutritious and tasty products: coconut milk, coconut oil, coconut flakes, which today have taken root on Russian store shelves at quite affordable prices. I write the word "nut" in quotation marks, because according to botanical canons, the fruit of the coconut tree is not a nut, but is a drupe. Sweet juice flows through the "veins" of the peduncle.
For a cozy and comfortable life, a person needs not only food, but also a roof over his head, at least some kind of furniture, dishes for meals and other household items. And here the Coconut tree again rushes to the aid of man. Its glossy hard leaves, skillfully laid on the roof of the house, will shelter a human dwelling from tropical showers and annoying mosquitoes. The fibers located between the outer shell of the coconut and its hard shell, for example, serve as filling for sleeping mattresses. Craftsmen make dishes and decorative crafts from a hard shell.
Asiendochki, at least occasionally purchasing coconuts, can use the fibers and shredded shells to make a coconut substrate in which to grow plants. Such a substrate is nutritious and moisture-consuming, which will help out summer residents who visit their country estates only on weekends.
Local residents also use the roots of the Coconut palm in the household, preparing a dye from them.
Where coconut palms grow, the use of their roots and tops is much wider than will fit in this short article. For example, coconuts "nuts" can be used as flower pots, as was done on one of the beaches of Koh Phangan, and captured by me in this photo:
Coconuts that have fallen to the ground, which have released leaves and roots, are ready-made planting material that can be used to decorate the territory of a cafe open to the sky, as in the following photo:
Or add a cozy touch to the spacious veranda of the house:
The fruits of the coconut tree are so heavy that they can serve as a temporary support for a light canopy from the rain:
In the literature on the Coconut palm, they write that today, three hundred and sixty ways are known for the beneficial use of the underground and aboveground parts of the palm. It would take a book to describe all of them. I told about the methods that I had to see with my own eyes.
