Forsythia is an amazingly beautiful shrub, pleasing the eye with a huge number of spectacular yellow buds from the very spring. But forsythia does not always please with its magnificent flowering, and there are many reasons for this: both not entirely favorable climatic conditions and improper care of a green pet can become such. What can be done if the beautiful forsythia flatly refuses to bloom, and why does she do it?
Landing time and climate
In different climatic conditions, forsythia blooms at different times: if in the southern regions the first buds on trees can be seen by the end of February (or more precisely, in its last decade), then in the middle lane, forsythia blooms only by the beginning of April, and in north - and at all by May. So, if forsythia does not bloom earlier, this is quite normal.
It is also important when exactly these bright plants were planted in open ground - experienced gardeners are well aware that some varieties of forsythia bloom only after three, and sometimes even after four years, moreover, there are such varieties, the first flowering of which begins only six years after landing! And the time of the first flowering of forsythia depends on exactly how it was planted - if the shrubs were grown from seeds, they can bloom only after six years, and if they were planted with cuttings, then you can safely wait for flowering in the third year. In short, in some cases you just need to be patient and wait!
The main reason is the human factor
Many summer residents are well aware that forsythia is very unpretentious, but this is not at all a reason to relax and let its development take its course. Just like any other plants, this beauty needs systematic feeding. Closer to the end of winter, when a beautiful plant begins to wake up slowly, it will not hurt to spread a prepared mullein around it - this approach will allow the forsythia to get all the nutritional components it needs and gain vitality, which means that very soon it will delight its happy owners of amazing beauty flowering! And so that the manure does not dry out, it is recommended to sprinkle it with last year's foliage or a thin layer of soil.
And after another month, forsythia must be fed with good mineral fertilizers - both phosphate-potassium and nitrogen. If the bushes grow on acidic soils, it is quite acceptable to process such soils with slaked lime.
Incorrect cuts
Novice gardeners almost always try to prune plants at an enviable frequency, because they are convinced that this is very important and simply necessary for green pets! Meanwhile, an illiterate approach to this event can be fraught with very unpleasant consequences. For example, the reason for the reluctance to bloom is often too long pruning of forsythia, during which it is not taken into account that a sufficiently large number of formed buds remain on the cut branches. To avoid this kind of trouble, it is best to prune the shrubs immediately after they have faded. First of all, of course, dried and old branches are cut off, and then those that excessively thicken the bushes. As for the long pruning, it should be carried out with the utmost care - first, the dried branches are removed, and the old ones are cut off the next year. With this approach, forsythia will definitely not forget to bloom in the spring!
Preparation for wintering
In order for forsythia to continue to delight with its magnificent flowering from year to year, it must be properly prepared for winter. For the winter, forsythia must be covered! This is necessary so that fragile flower buds do not suffer from too severe frosts, and also so that they are not pecked by birds that often winter in country gardens. In addition, young shoots that have not sheltered can freeze over, and the absence of snow in winter is generally fraught with their death.
Having insulated the forsythia near-stem areas, they immediately pull the bushes with twine and cover their crowns with a special “blanket”. And in the presence of heavy snowfalls, you can safely use such a natural "insulation" as snow - if you sprinkle the edges of the bushes with it, the flower buds will be reliably protected from the destructive cold for them. And even if frost-resistant varieties of forsythia grow in the garden, you still should not neglect the shelter - the branches of such plants, of course, are unlikely to suffer from frost, but vulnerable buds may easily not survive them. The most important thing is to never use plastic wrap as a covering material, because it will not allow air to pass through, and even under the winter sun, forsythia bushes can wake up from winter sleep, which will inevitably lead to their death.
