The mismatch of the hosts with the varietal characteristics is not a deception of the seller. The plant, due to florist's mistakes, can change the texture and color of the leaves: blue leaves turn into green, striped into solid colors, etc. Consider the reasons that affect the development of the seedling
What is Hosta
The popularity of the hosta is due to its unpretentiousness, high decorativeness and a variety of varieties. This is a perennial herbaceous culture - the basis for decorating ridges, flower beds, curbs, lawns, shady areas. It grows in the form of a spherical bush, luxurious leaves are collected in a basal rosette. In summer, tall flower stalks appear, budding lasts 2-3 weeks.
Hosta is the leader in the number of varieties - about 12 thousand (over 600 registered). Among garden plants, it stands out for its luxurious leaves and longevity, in favorable conditions they develop well up to 25 years.
Varieties are classified by height, type of color, leaf shape and texture (wavy, pimpled, curly, lanceolate, etc.). By size, hosts are subdivided into dwarf (10 cm), semi-dwarf / miniature (10-15), Small (15-25). High include Medium (30-50 cm), Large (50-70), Giant (more than 70 cm). They are divided into 4 groups by color.
1.
Green consists of plants with emerald, light green leaves.
2.
Blue - foliage of blue shades.
3.
Mediovariety - a light leaf plate has a green, dark green edging.
4.
Variegata - the largest subgroup with an extraordinary coloration. It includes speckled, variegated, striped, with a spotted and light outline of the framing.
I will name the most spectacular varieties of hosts June, Blue Cadet, Elegance. They have dense leaves of nifrite, dark green, emerald color. Of the variegated, Univitata, Patriot, First Mate, Wide Brim, Aureomakulata can be distinguished.
Why is the blue hosta turning green
When purchasing a hosta, you need to know that this species does not have pure blue leaves. Typically, the leaves have variations in shades of blue. This is clearly seen on young growth, immediately after regrowth (May-June).
By the middle of summer, blue hosta varieties can change color, it depends on varietal characteristics or on the wrong planting site (too much sun). Find a corner for the plant where there is no midday sun rays (shade, partial shade) and plant it there.
Why does the hosta have a pale border or not?
The color of the border of the leaf depends on the variety, it can be yellow, light green, white, dark green. The decorative strip is missing or barely showing through - this is a sign of an incorrectly chosen place for the seedling (a lot of sunlight). Such specimens fully show their decorative effect on shady areas - a transplant is required.
The quality of the picture can be affected by the poverty of the soil. Water the plant with Siliplant or Ferovit, Cytovit micronutrient fertilizers. For application under the bush, you can use the biological products Chistoflor or Trichoflor, Sporobacterin.
Why stripes are missing
The specificity of striped species is manifested only in adult plants. Subject to the rules of planting and care for young seedlings, striping does not happen in the first year. In many mature shrubs, a characteristic pattern is noticeable in the second half of summer, when the young foliage will get stronger. Similar metamorphoses occur with yellow hosts, at the beginning of development: they have a light green tint.
Banding can be absent from lack and excess of moisture. Do not plant striped hosts in low-lying areas with stagnant water. If the selected place is excessively dry (sand), regular watering is needed.
Why hosta loses its texture
The absence of blistering, the effect of "crocodile skin" is a sign of a young plant. When purchasing varieties with textured foliage, you should be patient. In the first 3 years, such species do not show their features. The plant must grow and get stronger - a well-developed root system will begin to stimulate the growth of strong foliage that will meet the declared characteristics.
Why does white hosta turn green
Lovers of white-leaved varieties should know that the plant fully produces its characteristic qualities in a limited period. The white color is the result of the peculiarity of growth, a similar effect is found only in young leaves, by the middle of summer it disappears and the plant acquires a green color.
The whiteness is provided by the excess starch accumulated in the last season in the root system. By July, the reserves of this substance decrease, and photosynthesis goes into a normal format. White hosts have a short growing season, grow slowly, do not require frequent division.
