Why does Tradescantia change its color?

Tradescantia is so easy to care for and reproduce that even a child can cope with this task. At the same time, the baby will probably be interested in the rooting process, especially since the result is almost always positive. Therefore, when a young botanist dreams of his own greenhouse, you can start with this plant. Tradescantia takes root easily and grows rapidly, so that the visual fruits of labor can be observed very soon, and this process will not seem boring to the student

Dense waterfall of tradescantia

Tradescantia is a member of the commeline family. These are perennial grasses that can easily be mistaken for lianas, but they are rather creepers, the shoots of which in their natural habitat, in the tropical swampy areas of North America, spread along the ground and take root very easily.

In indoor floriculture, ampelous varieties of tradescantia are more common. After planting several cuttings in one pot and placing them on a high shelf, very soon they will descend like a thick waterfall to the floor. Popular varieties include:

• white-flowered tradescantia - with burgundy-brown stems and pointed bright green leaves;

• river tradescantia - with a green leaf plate on the front side and purple-red - on the back side;

• variegated tradescantia - differs in contrast-colored green, white, pink stripes of small dense foliage.

But there are also erect representatives of Tradescantia, which raise their tall thick stem high.

Where did the colorful stripes of Tradescantia disappear?

The flower is famous for its endurance and develops equally well in both cold and warm rooms. Tradescantia is undemanding to lighting. However, it should be borne in mind that in the absence of sunlight, the shoots are strongly elongated, and variegated forms in the shade can lose their contrasting color and completely turn green. But when you move to a more illuminated corner, this decorative feature again returns to the appearance of the plant.

However, prolonged exposure to the sun is also undesirable. Because of this, a tropical plant, which prefers light partial shade and high humidity, can get burned and lose some of its foliage.

Unlike other flowers, Tradescantia is not afraid of waterlogged soil. A native of swampy places, this plant likes abundant watering. But stagnation of water in the pot is undesirable. In the warm season, watering is performed in 1-2 days, focusing on the state of the topsoil under the flower. In winter, watered no more than 2 times a week, after the soil dries up. Half an hour after moistening the soil, remove excess water from the pan.

Methods for reproduction of Tradescantia in indoor conditions

Tradescantia propagates very easily by cuttings. This procedure can be carried out at any time of the year. Soil mixture for tradescantia is made up of:

• deciduous land - 2 parts;

• turf land - 1 part;

• humus earth - 1 part.

It is useful to add a little river sand to the substrate.

The shoot is cut into cuttings 10-15 cm long. They can be immediately planted in pots with a moist nutrient substrate. Rooting will happen very quickly, within a few days. In the absence of all the necessary ingredients for making up the soil mixture, the end of the cutting can be immersed in wet sand or, in extreme cases, in a glass of water.

In the spring, sowing of Tradescantia seeds is performed. In March, they are immersed in a mixture of peat and sand. To speed up the process, the crops are arranged in a mini-greenhouse, covering them with glass or transparent film. The optimum temperature for seed germination is + 20 ° C. Crops are regularly moistened by spraying with warm water and ventilated.
