Henry Ward Beecher on flowers

Although the name of Henry Ward Beecher (1813-06-24 - 1887-03-08), an American social reformer, went down in the history of the United States for his services as an orator and publicist who advocated the abolition of slavery, the right of women to vote, permission to enter the country of the Chinese and much more, people writing about him do not forget to mention that his younger sister was the world famous writer, Elizabeth-Harriet Beecher-Stowe. After all, no matter how great the contribution of social activists to a more just order of the human community, their writings do not enjoy the widespread popularity for which his sister's novel "Uncle Tom's Cabin" is famous.

Perhaps there is not a single Soviet child who did not shed at least one tear, imagining a scene of a novel, when a black woman with a baby in her arms jumps from one ice floe, rapidly rushing along the river, to another, in order to find freedom for herself and her child on the opposite bank, where slavery is not held in high esteem. May the reader forgive me for a slight digression from the topic, because our conversation is about flowers.

So, Henry Ward Beecher, whose fiery speeches became the source of many catchphrases, once said about flowers with these words: “The flowers are the sweetest thing God has ever done and forgot to put a soul on”. I would translate this phrase as follows: "Flowers are the most flawless (literally, the sweetest) thing ever created by God, who has forgotten to put his soul into them." True, today people from science declare that flowers also have a soul, but not all people are able to communicate with it.

Flawless creatures of nature

I propose to admire several impeccable creatures of the plant blooming world, for which I had to take care of a little for a while.

Snow-white bloom of Guava

Quite unpretentious tree "Guava" adorns its simple whole leaves in spring with snow-white flowering. Among the dense foliage, you will not immediately notice the swollen flower buds, turning into such a paradise beauty. In the main photo there is a Guava flower.

It was not for nothing that the Spaniards, having come to American lands and met groves from Guava on their victorious path, decided that they were in Paradise - such a delicate aroma emanated from the fruit-bearing trees. In addition, the Guava fruit is a natural antibiotic that helps humans fight harmful microbes and viruses.

Bright lights of the Pomegranate tree

Spring comes to North Africa, as well as to Russia, in March. The pomegranate tree is covered with fresh leaves, among which, here and there, not very large, scarlet lights of flowers flash. If you believe the words of the Prophet Mohammed, then such flowers adorn the Garden of Eden. So, you can enjoy a piece of Paradise on Earth.

A little time will pass and the flowers pollinated by insects will turn into amazing fruits, which served as a symbol of fertility to the ancient Egyptians. Indeed, one fruit contains a large community of sour berries that support human health.

Blooming Opuntia

Although the African climate is to the taste of the cactus, it was born on the American continent. This amazing leafless plant does not hope for Heaven, and therefore stores moisture in its shoots, similar to green juicy cakes, which are called "leaves" by the common people. Throw such a "leaf" carelessly on the sand, and after a while you suddenly discover that it is already firmly rooted and is preparing for growth.

Unlike thorny shoots, the flowers of Opuntia are very delicate, large and showy. Flower corolla petals can be red or yellow, like in our garden. In the center of the corolla, brave stamens are located in a friendly flock, surrounding a flower pistil with a dense ring.

The pollinated flower will produce a barrel-shaped green fruit, which, when ripe, will take on a pleasant purple color. Only now, external attractiveness, as happens among people, is deceiving, since the fetus is armed with thin and sharp hairs that are almost invisible to the eye, from which it is not very easy to get rid of wounded hands. There is nothing to be done, because the plant cannot escape from enemies, and therefore invents its own types of weapons.
