Among the flowering shrubs of the first half of summer, mock-orange or garden jasmine stands out for its aroma. Strong branches are covered with numerous flowers collected at the ends of last year's shoots. What conditions are necessary for the cultivation of an excellent representative of the flora?
Habitat requirements
Chubushniki love a sunny place for their development. In shady areas, the flowering is weak, the shoots are strongly elongated. With a close occurrence of groundwater, a drainage layer of broken brick or expanded clay with the addition of river sand 15 cm high is arranged for the roots.
Under the bushes, mix humus, leafy earth with sand in a ratio of 2: 3: 1. Plants respond with gratitude to increasing soil fertility.
Winter hardiness
In general, garden jasmine has good winter hardiness. But not all varieties can winter without loss in the conditions of the Middle Lane. It depends on the type, origin of the planting material.
Most foreign analogues can withstand frosts down to -15 degrees, domestic hybrids are able to survive the cold season perfectly at a temperature of -25 degrees. At lower rates, the tops of the shoots are partially frozen over. In the spring, after pruning, powerful plants give a new growth of shoots, replacing the lost branches.
Landing
Depending on the purpose, the bushes are planted in groups at a distance of 1-1.5 m from each other, creating certain compositions. For hedges, the planting density is increased to 0.5 meters between plants.
Digging holes 50 cm deep, with the same diameter. A mixture of humus, sand, peat is added. A chubushnik is planted, deepening the root collar by 2 cm. The roots are straightened, poured with water at the rate of a bucket per bush. Fall asleep with fertile soil. Compact the earth around the stems with your hand. Mulch with sawdust for better moisture retention.
Care
In early spring, garden jasmine is fed with complex fertilizer Kemira Lux or nitroammophos at the rate of a flat tablespoon per bucket of liquid. Depending on the age of the plant, 5-10 liters of solution are poured under the root.
After flowering, they are fed with phosphorus-potassium mixtures of superphosphate and potassium sulfate in a 2: 1 ratio with the addition of a glass of ash from burning wood. Nitrogen is excluded during this period to better prepare the plant for wintering.
In dry years, water regularly once a week for 1-2 buckets of water at the root. They loosen the ground in near-trunk circles superficially, removing weeds, delaying the evaporation of moisture.
Pruning
Correct pruning plays an important role in the development of the shrub. In early spring, dry, frostbitten shoots are removed to a healthy bud. One-sided plants are given a symmetrical shape. Strong branches are shortened by 1/3, making it possible to form lateral shoots of medium height.
Old stems over 10 years old are removed annually in the spring. Rejuvenation of the bushes stimulates abundant flowering, the development of new replacement shoots. With age, the crown is partially exposed, the tops thicken, which leads to a sloppy appearance. Cardinal pruning will help to restore decorative qualities.
The procedure is carried out in 2 stages:
1. In the spring of the first year, 5 branches are shortened, leaving 40 cm above ground level, the rest are removed completely. Large sections are covered with garden pitch. Stimulate the growth of fertilizing nitrogen fertilizers (diluted infusion of nettle, mullein or urea), abundant watering.
2. At the beginning of the season, in the second year, the shoots are cut into a ring, leaving 2-3 strong shoots on each branch - the basis of the future bush.
After flowering, dried buds are removed, preventing the plant from spending energy to ripen the seeds.
We will consider the reproduction of a chubushnik in the next article.
