Lagenaria fruits are interesting not only for their unusual shape, but also for their nutritional and dietary properties. This pumpkin is similar in color to squash and zucchini, and in shape - to a cucumber or a bottle. It is not for nothing that she found application in the kitchen not only as food, but also as a container for storing food. Painted bowls, vases, jugs, toys and even musical instruments are made from it. So having grown this wonderful vegetable in your garden, you will have a chance not only to taste its useful pulp, but also to join the world of arts and crafts
What you need to know about seeds
Lagenaria seeds are enclosed in a very hard shell. They germinate for a long time, so it is recommended to sow germinated. This is done in May. But in June, you can still manage to plant seedlings of this interesting pumpkin in your beds.
If the plant is to your liking, then for the future you should remember how to germinate the seeds. For this:
1. The seed should be soaked in warm water for 2 days.
2. After that, wrap it in a soft cloth or several times folded gauze, which must be kept moist.
3. Leave at a temperature of + 20 … + 25 ° C, in such conditions the seeds should germinate for 3 days.
Planting seedlings in June
For planting seedlings, you will need deep holes, about 25 cm. The hole with seedlings is buried with a nutrient mixture, which consists of:
• 2 parts of humus soil (or compost);
• 1 part wood ash.
It is useful to add a vegetable mixture or nitrophosphate.
Lagenaria itself is a tall and climbing plant, and the fruits are large, they can stretch more than 1 m, and have a weight of about 3-5 kg. Therefore, this unusual pumpkin needs support during cultivation. It will be necessary to monitor how the whips and fruits develop in order to tie them to the crossbars of the support in time. In order not to build a special 2-meter trellis-ladder under the lagenaria, it can be planted near fences, fences, gazebos along which it can wind.
Lagenaria care
If you already have experience in growing pumpkin, then there will be no problems with lagenaria - they are similar. But there are peculiarities in agricultural technology in the process of pinching a plant. The top of the central stem is shortened when the plant reaches the top of the trellis. The pinching of the lateral lashes is performed depending on the formation of ovaries on them, shortening to the third leaf. Non-fertile lashes can be removed completely.
Lagenaria blooms very beautifully. On its stems large flowers bloom on long stalks. However, she prefers to do this in the afternoon, completely dissolving the petals by late evening. In this regard, the natural pollination of the plant is difficult, and you need to help the flowers in this matter in an artificial way.
It is useful to know that if you are going to start breeding Lagenaria with your own collected seeds, then you need to take the trouble and pollinate the female flowers with the pollen of several male ones. This promotes the formation of more seeds and increases the germination rate. The first fruit set should also be noted. They usually produce the best quality seeds.
Harvest
Another interesting feature of lagenaria is that in order to use the fruit for food, it is not at all necessary to cut it off from the plant as a whole. You can only cut off a part of the pumpkin! And the tissues at the cut site will cork very quickly. Thanks to this, the fruit continues to grow, and the gardener does not need to worry about how and where to store the huge fresh fruit.
Naturally, sooner or later, the crop will have to be harvested from the beds. This work needs to be done before the first frost. The fruits are cut with a lash and stored at room temperature. Seeds for propagation can be removed from the pumpkin in November.
