What fertilizers are suitable for gooseberries?

Despite the fact that these berry bushes are very unpretentious, they still require proper care and regular fertilization. Accordingly, in order to become the happy owner of a rich gooseberry harvest, it is important to learn how to fertilize it correctly! Only in this case will it actively bear fruit for several decades, giving eight to ten kilograms of juicy berries from each bush

How to fertilize gooseberries?

Gooseberry bushes need to start feeding slowly from the very first year of their life - this approach will contribute to the formation of strong and fairly strongly branched bushes with an impressive number of young basal shoots. And after a couple of years, they will certainly reach the maximum yield indicators!

It is important not to forget that as the number of berries increases, the gooseberry's need for various nutrients increases significantly. That is why the soil must be well fertilized. Ideally, gooseberries should be planted on sufficiently loose and light soils (sandy soils are especially well suited for these purposes), but if the soil is not loose enough, it is important to try to loosen it regularly. Despite the fact that the roots of the gooseberry are capable of deepening one and a half meters, most of them, as a rule, are deployed at a depth not exceeding thirty-five centimeters.

The soil is especially depleted in spring, and it is during this period that the process of blooming buds with flowers starts. How to feed berry bushes and soil? In the spring, nitrogen fertilizers are ideal for this purpose. Gooseberries need good feeding in the last spring month, as well as during the summer season - in this case, they should help the formation of new fruit buds and the filling of berries.

If ovaries with leaves began to fall off prematurely from gooseberry bushes, it is important to try to choose high-quality chlorine-containing fertilizers for them - they are usually applied to the soil in autumn.

What else can you fertilize gooseberries with?

During the entire first year after planting gooseberry bushes, it is recommended to feed them with saltpeter. For each berry bush, approximately 250 grams of this substance should be prepared, and these 250 grams are divided into three steps: the first feeding is given when the shoots reach a length of five to six centimeters, and the next two feeding are carried out at an interval of two to three weeks.

As for plants that have already turned two or three years old, then for them the amount of nitrate is increased to three hundred grams: one half of this rate is applied at the very beginning of spring, and the rest - with the onset of May. In the same period, berry bushes are pampered with potash or phosphorus fertilizers (if they were not applied during planting) - one hundred grams for each bush. And starting from the fourth year, potash, phosphorus and nitrogen fertilizers vital for gooseberries should be applied on an annual basis.

Favorably affects the development of berry bushes and the introduction of organic fertilizers. Since most of the gooseberry roots are not very deep, humus is quite suitable for these purposes. It does not hurt to stock up on good manure in advance (however, it is applied every two years, not more often, and this is done in the autumn), and in relatively small areas it can be replaced with compost. If the soil is too depleted, you can use liquid organic matter. As a rule, such dressings are carried out twice: after flowering and at the end of berry picking.

Regular feeding of gooseberries will not only allow you to enjoy wonderful harvests, but also help make plants much less susceptible to various pests and ailments!
