Water is a very valuable resource, however, a summer resident cannot do without watering, because without water, you can not even dream of crops that are pleasing to the eye! Irrigation is especially important in regions with low rainfall. Unfortunately, water is not cheap nowadays, and it is far from everywhere it is available in the required quantities. How to use water rationally so that it becomes possible to save it during irrigation? It turns out that everything is not so difficult
Rain for the salvation
If it suddenly rains, it's time to collect the streams of water flowing from the roofs into barrels. True, before starting to do this, it does not hurt to wait twenty minutes - this will allow dirty water to drain from the roofs, because only clean water should be used for irrigation. Of course, barrels placed under the gutters make the site less attractive, but in this case it is quite possible to come to terms with this temporary inconvenience, because as soon as the sun comes out again, the barrels can be removed.
And some gardeners-craftsmen went much further - having got used to connecting drains to a temporary plastic pipeline, they send streams of water flowing down from the roofs directly to the garden!
Irrigation canals
In regions with very hot climates, it will be advisable to dig out small irrigation ditches, through which water can subsequently be let in.
Planting green plants in blocks
All kinds of green plants (onions, leafy greens, etc.) are ideally recommended to be planted not in rows, but in blocks - this approach will significantly simplify watering, especially if they are carried out manually.
Weed control
It is imperative to carry out proper control over weeds - so that noxious weeds do not steal water from valuable garden crops, they must be cleaned out from the beds. You can also apply an impressive layer of mulch to the beds, which also perfectly helps to overcome weeds: all kinds of organic materials that make up mulch help in every possible way to retain life-giving moisture in the soil and prevent its evaporation. Siderata, grass, humus, hay, peat or a special film are especially well suited as mulch.
Windbreaks and shade shelters
If there are still no such in the summer cottage, it means that they need to be installed, because they perfectly help to reduce overheating of the beds and, as a result, the need for plants for moisture. It is quite permissible to plant rather tall plants like sunflowers as a shade shelter.
Containers with holes
Another interesting and at the same time effective way is to bury containers in the middle of the beds, on the sides of which small holes were made, and gradually add water to them, which in turn will gradually saturate the crops planted nearby.
Rotten manure and compost
It is very useful to bury in the beds and a lot of compost. If you add rotted manure or compost to the soil every time you plant all kinds of garden crops, the soil will retain moisture much better.
Planting
It is best to replant plants or plant seedlings in a permanent place before the rain - in this case, you can kill two birds with one stone: firstly, you can save on watering, and secondly, the plants will take root much better.
Drip irrigation
But in the case of drip irrigation, everything is not so simple. Some summer residents argue that such irrigation really helps to save water, while others, on the contrary, assure that water is consumed in this case even more, motivating this by the fact that a turned on pump or an open tap significantly increases its consumption (and in fact, quite often drip irrigation is performed continuously). They are convinced that if we recalculate the amount of water used for each kilogram of fruits and vegetables produced, it turns out that in reality the plants needed much less water. So in the case of drip irrigation, it is important to calculate everything carefully!
