For those who did not have time to sow radishes in the spring, you can do this at the end of summer. In June and July, such work does not have to be done, since not the most favorable conditions are formed for radish during this period. Summer heat and drought, as well as long daylight hours, lead to the fact that the plants shoot quickly. But already in August, the sun rather hides behind the horizon, which makes it possible to re-engage in the sowing of this culture. And the harvest will turn out even better than the spring one
Benefits of summer planting radishes
Autumn radish has a sweeter taste, it turns out to be juicier and larger. And it shoots much less often than with spring crops. And pests of crops of the cabbage family during this period should already be reduced. In particular, the cruciferous flea is not so fierce. Among other things, in the autumn period, the radish root crop is allowed to reach its optimal size, because it no longer has to be pulled out of the beds in order to free up space for the growth of the main crops.
The subtleties of choosing a site for summer sowing of radish
To obtain radish in September, sowing begins in August. For winter consumption and storage, this is done in early September. If in the spring radishes are sown as a precursor to more thermophilic vegetables or as a lighthouse culture, then in August it is placed on the already vacated beds. Here it is important to adhere to this rule: do not arrange beds where other cruciferous plants previously grew. This list includes cabbage, radish, daikon. Vegetables such as potatoes and tomatoes, onions and lettuce will be good predecessors. These crops have no enemies in common with radishes: diseases and dangerous pests.
We will take care of the fertile qualities of the beds
In order for the harvest to please the gardener, before sowing, care should be taken to restore the purity and fertility of the soil. This will help both organic and mineral fertilizers. The beds must be thoroughly cleaned of the remnants of previous crops. Then apply the following fertilizers:
• superphosphate - 1 table. l.;
• potassium salt - 1 table. l.;
• urea - 1 tsp. l.
This is a dose per 1 square meter. the area of the beds. It is also recommended to use a third of a bucket of humus. It can be replaced with matured compost. Wood ash will help to harvest a good harvest - 0.5 cups.
Features of summer sowing
Let's not forget that the fall radish forms a larger root crop. Therefore, it requires a large feeding area. Based on this, the holes for sowing seeds are made at a distance of about 10 cm in a row. The row spacing is about 20 cm.
For the prevention of vascular bacteriosis, seeds must be treated before sowing. To do this, they are heated for a quarter of an hour in hot water at a temperature of approximately + 45 … + 50? С. Then immerse in cold water for a couple of minutes. After this, the seed should be dried.
Caring for radish beds
In August, it is already quite cool. And so that the seedlings appear sooner, you can go for such a trick as covering the crops with foil. Before that, the crops must be thoroughly moistened.
Care consists in regular watering. It is advisable to moisten the soil at intervals of 2-3 days, depending on the weather. Watering is best done in the evening. But if a period of drought has come, then the frequency of humidification is increased. As for the volume of water, in the first one and a half weeks after sowing, experts recommend soaking the soil to a depth of 8 cm. When the time comes for the formation of a root crop, you need to reach a depth of 15 cm.
Pest control
If through holes appeared on the leaves of the radish, this indicates that the cruciferous flea has "worked" here. To get rid of the pest, they use ash. Spraying with ash infusion and dusting with this agent in a mixture with lime and tobacco dust helps. To prepare the infusion for 1 glass of ash, take 9 liters of water. The infusion is prepared for about a day.
