As you know, carrots belong to the group of cold-resistant vegetables, however, the most suitable temperature indicators for its cultivation are around + 22 … + 25 ° С. And in July it is not too late to sow early carrots, which are not intended for long-term storage in winter, but which will immediately be eaten in the first months of autumn. Such crops are best obtained in areas of the vegetable garden cleaned after early cabbage. It is not recommended to set aside for sowing places from which other roots or legumes have recently been removed

Requirements of carrots for the site and soil composition

For sowing in the summer, it is very important to choose the most suitable site for the development of carrots, so that they have time to ripen and gain weight before the cold weather. The best beds will be those that are located in an area open to sunlight. In the shade, the plants stretch out. This is partly why you should not sow carrots too thickly, so that the tails of the greenery do not shade each other. And it is imperative to carry out weeding from weeds, both before sowing and during the growing season of carrots.

If there is only one such place in the garden, it is undesirable to sow carrots at several times in the same year. It would be optimal to place it after:

• potatoes;

• onions;

• cucumbers;

• tomatoes;

• cabbage.

And you should not rush to sow carrots to your previous place of residence. Better to wait 3 years.

Carrot soil prefers sandy loam or loam. The soil for carrots should be fairly loose and with a deep arable layer, and the pH reaction should be neutral. It is important that the water in the soil does not stagnate. Excessive moisture in the beds will also retard growth and development, and in addition, it can cause diseases.

It is also necessary to ensure that the land is not overdried from lack of irrigation, rainfall or crusting on the surface. Carrots are very sensitive to moisture changes. If periods of long drought alternate with abundant moisture, this affects the quality, appearance of the root crop - it coarsens, cracks, and the taste deteriorates. It will be useful to add wood ash to the beds before sowing.

Mandatory carrot care measures

Before sowing, it is useful to soak the seeds for a day - this way the seedlings will appear sooner, and they will be more uniform, so you do not have to often thin out the beds. For sowing carrots in 4 rows, you will need to arrange a bed about 1 m wide. On average, the consumption of seeds per garden bed area is 1 square meter. is about 1-3 g. The depth of seeding is 2-3 cm. It depends on the quality of the soil: the lighter it is, the deeper the seeds are hidden.

It is beneficial to combine crops of carrots with radishes or lettuce or other early ripening leaf crops. They ripen faster and are used twice as efficiently.

To prevent the emergence of weeds, it is recommended to loosen the soil about once every 5 days. When the seedlings hatch and the first real leaf is formed, the rows with carrots are thinned out. After this procedure, there should be an interval of at least 2 cm between the plants in the beds. When small roots become noticeable, the thinning is repeated, already maintaining a distance of 4-5 cm.

Then the beds should be watered abundantly. This agricultural practice is an integral part of carrot care, otherwise plant growth will be delayed.

In addition to weeding and thinning, you also need to huddle carrots. During growth, the root crop often begins to peek out of the ground. In this case, the part not covered with soil turns green, and the carrot itself acquires a bitter taste.

It is not out of place to feed vegetables. For this, both organic matter and mineral fertilizers are used. Carrots respond well to a solution of poultry manure (1:10), as well as slurry (1: 5). Ammonium nitrate, superphosphate, potassium chloride are useful for carrots.
