Tulip Korolkov is a perennial herb belonging to the genus Tulip of the Liliaceae family. In Latin, the name of this plant will sound like this:

Tulipa korolkovii … The presented species of Tulips was named after the botanist, member of the National Academy of Sciences Nikolai Ivanovich Korolkov. The species under consideration was first introduced into cultivation in 1875 by the St. Petersburg Botanical Garden and described by the well-known botanist and gardener Eduard Ludwigovich Regel.

Area

In the wild, the presented plant species prefers clay and gravel-containing slopes, sandy plains and mountain systems at an altitude of about 2000 meters above sea level. The Korolkov tulip is the most common in Europe; it is used to decorate artificial mountain landscapes or as a potted plant.

Characteristics of culture

The considered species of tulips is a beautifully flowering bulbous miniature culture that grows no more than 20 centimeters above the ground. On a straight leafless gray-green peduncle there are long, exceeding the size of the plant, green-blue leaves of an elongated lanceolate shape, with a sharp top and an uneven corrugated edge in the amount of 3 pieces. Small, graceful, erect, goblet inflorescence reaches a maximum of 4 centimeters in diameter.

Perianth petals in the amount of 6 pieces have a rounded shape, bright red or orange color and a dark spot characteristic of this flower culture at the base of the inflorescence. In the center of the petals there is a small bundle with filamentous stamens of dark purple or black color and anthers of light or bright yellow hue.

The fruit is a small gray-green tricuspid box with seeds; in an adult, fully developed plant, the number of seeds varies from 100 to 150 pieces. The bulb is shaped like a small egg, not exceeding 2 centimeters in diameter, completely covered with hard, leathery, dark brown or black scales. Annual roots.

The Korolkov tulip belongs to the group of early-flowering plants, the period of blossoming of the buds begins in mid-March and lasts about two months, which directly depends on climatic conditions, watering and solar activity. At the beginning of June, the plant begins to bear fruit, this is the most suitable period for collecting seeds.

Cultivation conditions

The Korolkov tulip is especially appreciated for its colorful flowering and unpretentious care, it can grow comfortably even in the most unfavorable conditions, but, unfortunately, it will bloom weakly and for a short time, therefore, for the full development of this flower culture, it is advisable to prepare the most optimal conditions for growth.

When choosing a place for planting the plant species in question, it is necessary to pay attention to some features of this culture, since the Korolkov tulip, like most of its relatives, loves sunlight very much and does not tolerate high soil moisture, in which the bulbs quickly begin to rot, therefore, the plant dies …

The soil in the selected area should be fertile, with a light texture and abundantly filled with useful substances. Before planting plants, it is necessary to check the soil for acidity, because the presented species of tulips does not tolerate acidic soils and grows on them for a very short time. If the pH is high, lime must be added until the pH is neutral.

It is advisable to plant the bulbs in the fall no later than the first decade of October, so that the plant has time to take root and adapt before the onset of cold weather. Tulip Korolkov belongs to the group of frost-resistant crops, but for the winter it is advisable to cover the bulbs with peat and a mulch layer.
