Thunbergia grandiflora (Latin Thunbergia grandiflora) - flower culture; herbaceous evergreen liana, which belongs to the genus Thunbergia of the large Akantovaya family. In nature, the species is found in India, Australia, South America and other tropical places. Today, a representative of the genus is grown as an indoor and greenhouse plant.

Characteristics of culture

Large-flowered tunbergia is represented by herbaceous climbing plants, endowed with bare shoots and finger-dissected, toothed or whole-edged, smooth or slightly pubescent foliage, reaching a length of 18-20 cm. The flowers of the culture in question are rather large, which justifies the specific name. In length and width, they reach 7-8 cm, they are characterized by a light or dark purple color. There are also specimens that form blue or pale blue flowers, equipped with a snow-white throat. Flowers, in turn, are collected in weighty racemose inflorescences.

Growing features

Thunbergia large-flowered, like all representatives of the genus, is a light and heat-loving culture. She does not tolerate commonwealth with the cold. Even a minimal drop in temperature threatens death or stunting. It is recommended to place pots or containers with plants on the western or eastern windows. It is worth remembering that large-flowered tunbergia does not like direct sunlight, because they can damage the delicate foliage of plants. If the plant is placed on a south window, care should be taken to thoroughly shade.

It is not recommended to expose large-flowered tunbergia pots to northern windows. There, the crop will suffer from a lack of sunlight, which will most likely lead to the loss of foliage or flowers. It is also important to take care of the room temperature. Ideally, the temperature should be at least 20C in spring and summer, 15-18C in autumn and winter. In summer, plants should be placed on a balcony or street, but in places where there is no draft. Moreover, it is necessary to accustom plants to fresh air gradually by hardening.

Reproduction of culture

Large-flowered thunberg is propagated by seeds or vegetatively, that is, by cuttings. Sowing is carried out in spring or summer, preferably in late February - early March, then the plants will please with flowering in the coming summer. Seeds are sown in separate containers. Before sowing, the seeds are rubbed with sandpaper, because their shell is quite hard. Treatment with drugs that stimulate growth is not prohibited. Cuttings, in turn, are carried out throughout the spring. Cuttings are cut from young shoots and planted in a moist substrate.

Culture care

Tunbergia large-flowered is quite demanding for nursing operations. In the spring and summer, it needs abundant watering, which is carried out as the soil dries up. Watering is recommended to be carried out with lukewarm and settled water, in no case cold. In the fall, water volumes are reduced during irrigation, but they do it gradually. In hot weather, it is very important to spray the plants with a spray bottle. During flowering, it is necessary to systematically eliminate wilted flowers, otherwise the culture will not please with long flowering, and the decorative properties will significantly decrease.

It is not forbidden to carry out the front of the tunbergia large-flowered annually. The substrate, in turn, should be made up of leafy and soddy soil, peat, rotted humus and well-washed river sand. Simultaneously with the transplant, weak and damaged shoots are removed. By the way, the pruning procedure helps to stimulate flowering, but it must be done very carefully.
